(AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was admitted to a New York hospital Sunday after the discovery of a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton's doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam, her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said. He would not elaborate on the location of the clot but said Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for at least the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor the medication.

"Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," Reines said in a statement. "They will determine if any further action is required."

Clinton, 65, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from a stomach virus that left her severely dehydrated. The concussion was diagnosed Dec. 13 and Clinton was forced to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East that had been planned for the next week.

The seriousness of a blood clot "depends on where it is," said Dr. Gholam Motamedi, a neurologist at Georgetown University Medical Center who was not involved in Clinton's care.

Clots in the legs are a common risk after someone has been bedridden, as Clinton may have been for a time after her concussion. Those are "no big deal" and are treated with six months of blood thinners to allow them to dissolve on their own and to prevent further clots from forming, he said.

A clot in a lung or the brain is more serious. Lung clots, called pulmonary embolisms, can be deadly, and a clot in the brain can cause a stroke, Motamedi said.

Keeping Clinton in the hospital for a couple of days could allow doctors to perform more tests to determine why the clot formed, and to rule out a heart problem or other condition that may have led to it, he said.

Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is director of Duke University's stroke center, said blood can pool on the surface of the brain or in other areas of the brain after a concussion, but those would not be treated with blood thinners, as Clinton's aide described.

Clinton was forced to cancel Dec. 20 testimony before Congress about a scathing report into the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The report found that serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed.

Some conservative commentators suggested Clinton was faking the seriousness of her illness and concussion to avoid testifying, although State Department officials vehemently denied that was the case.

Lawmakers at the hearings ? including Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman who has been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Clinton ? offered her their best wishes.

Last Thursday, before the discovery of the blood clot, Reines said Clinton was expected to return to work this week.

The former first lady and senator, who had always planned to step down as America's top diplomat in January, is known for her grueling travel schedule. She is the most traveled secretary of state in history, having visited 112 countries while in the job.

Clinton is considered a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, although she has not announced plans to run.

Case of the mysterious wedding photos solved

The owner of a USB key containing mystery wedding photos from 2009 has been found.

Carole Mann, who found the flash drive in a purse she picked up a Burlington church rummage sale, said she was contacted by the mother of the bride this morning who said the storage device belonged to her. The mother had donated a tan, Roots handbag to the Oct. 26 sale, Mann said.

?I?m very happy that we can give that to the owner,? Mann said about the USB key.

Mann heard from many concerned callers who hoped to help identify the flash drive?s owner.

It turns out Mann already knew one of the callers.

?A friend of my daughter?s called and said that she was at the wedding, and it turns out her parents were there,? Mann said.

Mann also heard from a mother of one of the bridal party members as well as a photographer who suggested Mann try to track down the photos through a photographer?s association.

?It?s a small world, isn?t it?? Mann said.

Chinese court orders Apple to cough ?100k to writers for violating copyright

Apple got a nasty post-Christmas present in China on Thursday when a Beijing court hit it with a 1.03m yuan (?102,000) fine after ruling the fruity tech titan was responsible for applications which appeared on its App Store containing unlicensed content.

The Beijing No 2 Intermediate People's Court concluded that Apple had violated China?s Copyright Law and ordered it to cough up to the plaintiffs ? eight Chinese writers who formed the China Written Works Copyright Society (CWWCS) in a bid to get compensation.

The decision, while a victory for the eight and two separate companies, was far lower than the 23 million yuan (?2.3m) claim they filed back in February, according to Apple Insider.

They had apparently claimed that Apple knew about the illegal content for some time but dragged its heels over removing the apps and told them to contact the pirate app developers themselves.

This isn?t the first time Apple has been targeted by Chinese authors seeking compensation for apps containing unlicensed copies of their works.

Back in March it emerged that the Writers? Rights Alliance of 22 authors filed a 50 million yuan (?5m) lawsuit relating to 95 books allegedly sold illegally on the App Store.

Then in November a Taiwanese writer and film director revealed how he had been branded an ?idiot? by Apple staff in Hong Kong after flying to the region to confront them over a long-running copyright saga.

Once again, the issue revolved around the author trying and failing to get Cupertino to remove copyright-infringing apps containing his content.

A spokeswoman for Apple told the BBC that the company takes "copyright infringement complaints very seriously".

"We're always updating our service to better assist content owners in protecting their rights," she added. ?

Obama: Troops aiding African diplomat evacuation

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says 50 U.S. troops have deployed to the African country of Chad to help evacuate U.S. citizens and embassy personnel from the neighboring Central African Republic's capital of Bangui in the face of rebel advances toward the city.

Obama informed congressional leaders of Thursday's deployment in a letter Saturday citing a "deteriorating security situation" in the Central African Republic.

The evacuation of the U.S. diplomats comes in the wake of criticism of the Obama administration's handling of diplomatic security at its consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in a Sept. 11 attack.

In the Central African Republic, rebels have seized at least 10 northern towns. On Saturday they continued their advance, seizing the city of Sibut, 114 miles from Bangui.

China launches GPS-like Beidou satellite services across Asia-Pacific region

China launches Beidou satellite GPS services across AsiaPacific region

China has kicked off commercial and public services of its Beidou satellite navigation system across the Asia-Pacific rim in earnest, after finishing trials it started last year. Civilians in the region as far away as Australia are now able to navigate using the satellites to a distance of 30 feet and speeds as low as 0.5 mph -- comparable to (WAAS-less) GPS, according to officials. Currently the nation has 16 navigation satellites aloft along with four experimental models, and expects to provide worldwide coverage by 2020 when it'll have as many as 40 additional units in orbit, according to China Daily. China launched the project in 2000 to avoid reliance on the US GPS system, and joins that service, Russia's GLONASS and eventually Galileo in the EU at the sat nav soirée. Berlusconi said he never expected Monti would reneg on his repeated assurances that he "wouldn't use the public prominence as head of a technical government for an ulterior presence in politics."

Monti was named to lead a technical government after Berlusconi was forced to resign amid Italy's slide into the eurozone's debt crisis.

Pony back with circus after Christmas kidnap

(AP) ? A tiny pony is back at its Austrian circus home more than a week after apparently being kidnapped by a woman who wanted to give her sick daughter a Christmas surprise.

Fridolin the pony, who is only about 2 feet (60 centimeters) tall, went missing from the Vienna Christmas Circus early last week. He was found near a Vienna bus stop Wednesday.

Circus director Adolf Lauenburger told the Austria Press Agency Thursday that a woman called the circus and told officials where to find the pony. She said her daughter wanted a circus pony and she'd taken him to fulfill the girl's wishes for Christmas ? but decided she couldn't keep the animal.

Lauenburger wasn't able to identify the woman. Police were looking into the matter.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Learn ...

Investing your money in commercial property can be a profitable endeavor for a variety of reasons. However, you need to decide whether an investment is right for you. The more you find out, the more money you can make through commercial real estate. These tips make a great starting point that can help you learn more about commercial real estate.

Lower the risk of default by eliminating as many things that can be labeled ?event of default? as you can prior to negotiating a commercial property lease. The less behaviors you have that constitute default, the less likely it is that you?ll have to deal with a tenant?s default. You want to avoid any circumstances that could lead to this occurrence.

Understand how the firm you?re looking to work with conducts its business and measures results. Find out how they figure out your space requirements, their important selection criteria of the property, strategy in negotiations and other things that will matter in your transaction. These are all things you should know before you sign with a firm.

TIP! Focus on a single investment each time. You should focus on a certain investment type, such as office buildings, apartment complexes, buildable land or retail properties.

Always think ahead when considering a real estate investment. Every property is eventually going to need maintenance and repairs, and you need to consider what potential properties are going to cost you over the duration of your use. You may have to update the wiring, or install a new roof, for example. All buildings have these kinds of requirements, depending on the specific building, some may require more repairs than others. You must consider these requirements, and have a plan in place to handle them over the long haul.

Regardless of whether you are buying or selling the property, it is in your best interest to negotiate. It is important that your concerns and opinions are heard and recognized by the other parties; you must always put forth the effort to ensure fair pricing for the commercial property.

When dealing in commercial real estate, it is important to stay patient and calm. Do not go into an investment out of haste. You could end up finding that the property falls short of your total goals, making it a regretful purchase. Plan to keep your eye on your market for as long as a year if you want to find the right investment.

TIP! Be sure to see and enter into good deals. Veterans in the commercial real estate market can spot a lucrative deal very quickly.

Secure appropriate financing before going forward. There is a big difference between a home loan and a commercial loan. They are better in a number of ways. While commercial loans generally require a more significant down payment, lenders are usually more flexible about where or from whom you get that down payment.

When interviewing potential brokers, ask them to tell you about their experience level with the type of commercial investments you are interested in. Make sure that they are experts in the area in which you are selling or buying. Entering into an exclusive contract with that particular broker is a good idea.

Maintaining and cleaning commercial properties can be costly, but occasionally it is possible to save money. You are only potentially responsible for paying for cleanup if you held an ownership interest in a property. It can be incredibly expensive to dispose of waste that is not environmentally friendly. Inquire at an environmental assessment company about obtaining an environmental report. They might cost a bit more up front, but they can end up saving you much in the long run.

TIP! If you are signing a commercial real estate lease, be hesitant if you are asked to sign a standard lease form. The largest real estate companies are known to fill their lease documentation with wordy clauses including hidden requirements.

As the beginning of this article already mentioned, there are many reasons for you to consider investing in commercial real estate, all of which require some additional knowledge on the topic. The tactics presented here provide a groundwork of information that you can use to break into the commercial real estate investing scene.

Do You Walk The Walk? | The Best Life Blog: Fitness, Weight-Loss ...

Posted By Bob Greene on December 27, 2012

Walking a little more each day is one of the easiest ways to build more activity into your life, burn a few extra calories and reach the recommended weekly goal of 150 minutes of exercise. Yet few Americans are taking advantage of the opportunity. In fact, less than 25 percent of us walk or bike for transportation (say, to get to the store or work) more than 10 minutes continuously in a whole week, according to a recent study from Yale University.

The few Americans who are pounding the pavement?or getting ?active transportation,? as the study authors called it?are reaping some serious benefits. Those who got the most active transportation had a body mass index (a ratio of height to weight) more than one point lower than those who got the least. They also had a three-point lower waist circumference, a 34 percent reduced chance of high blood pressure and a 31 percent lower risk for diabetes.

You?re probably formulating the reason why you can?t walk in your head right now, right? Maybe it?s, ?I?m too busy.? Perhaps you?ll go with, ?It?s too cold.? Or it could be the standard ?I don?t have the time.? That?s the beauty of walking: You don?t need the time?you have to do it anyway. You just have to plan ahead and find ways to sneak in a few more steps.

Here are a few suggestions to help you hoof it more often:

? Have some holiday packages to return at stores on opposite ends of the mall? Instead of parking, making your return, then driving to the other side of the mall, walk indoors from one store to the next.

??Don?t have time to walk the whole way to work? Walk part of the way. Park a few blocks from the office or get off at the stop before if you?re taking the train or bus and walk the rest of the way.

? Walk the kids to school. Get a few neighbors together and form a walking school bus. You can catch up with all the neighbors, get the kids to school and score some exercise.

? Stop searching for the closest spot. Here?s an oldie but goodie: Park far away from the store and walk.? I know, you?ve probably heard this hundreds of times before, but it?s easy and it works!

? Choose a nearby store and walk to it once a week. You?ll save gas and the environment, too.

Another helpful tip: Use a pedometer, a gadget that counts your steps. It?s fun to challenge yourself to increase your daily steps, and it?s also very rewarding to have a tangible measure of progress. I recommend Omron?s pedometers.

Ready to take the walk-more challenge? Where are you going to walk today?

Treatment options for Vein diseases - ArticlesWide.com

If you have any type of vein disease or have problems dealing with issues such as Spider Veins or Varicose Veins you understand that it is a health issue that is not fun or enjoyable. This issue is a problem for many. In fact, about 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem. The good news is that solutions are available. Thanks to new medical technology and years of research on everything from Deep Venous Thrombosis to Spider Veins, a lot of vein problems that are so commonly suffered in the United States can get treated well.

There are a multitude of treatments that are available for Vein Disease and it is up to you to decide which one will have the greatest impact on helping out your cause. The doctor that you visit in your initial appointment to discuss treatment options will go over all of the potential options available. Below, we have analyzed various treatment options that are available to people today and have gone over their advantages and disadvantages. Each option has unique benefits and drawbacks and it is ultimately up to you to decide, but based on the lists below, you should gain better knowledge as what treatment option will best suite your specific needs.

The first option is a procedure called Sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a safe and proven non-surgical treatment for small or medium-sized varicose veins and is best for the treatment for spider veins. A tiny needle is used to implement a sclerosing solution into the target vein. This solution shuts it down the vein by irritating the lining of it.

Another option is called Endovenous laser Treatment (EVLT). This procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for veins that are located beneath the skins surface which are not working properly due to malfunctioning valves. The procedure involves the insertion of a tiny laser fiber into the vein, which seals the vein shut so it eventually collapses and fades from the surface of the skin.

The next option available is VNUS. This is a new procedure utilizes radiofrequency waves created by an electrode to close the vein. It closes the vein by heating the vein wall causing contraction of the vein. The VNUS Closure procedure has very little discomfort associated with it and yields a typically high degree of success.

Microphlebectomy is a procedure that is also commonly referred to as ambulatory phlebectomy. This is a type of surgery commonly used to remove large bulging veins. Many times, varicose veins near the surface of the skin are too large to treat with Sclerotherapy and are too small to treat with laser ablation. In these cases, this procedure is recommended to treat unsightly or painful leg veins close to the skins surface. Even though this is an invasive surgery, the risks associated are minimal.

As you see above, there is a great deal of options available to you for treatment of Vein Disease. Make sure you go over the options thoroughly and choose the treatment that fits your needs the best!

(AP) ? For many passengers, air travel is only about finding the cheapest fare.

But as airlines offer a proliferating list of add-on services, from early boarding to premium seating and baggage fees, the ability to comparison-shop for the lowest total fare is eroding.

Global distribution systems that supply flight and fare data to travel agents and online ticketing services like Orbitz and Expedia, accounting for half of all U.S. airline tickets, complain that airlines won't provide fee information in a way that lets them make it handy for consumers trying to find the best deal.

"What other industry can you think of where a person buying a product doesn't know how much it's going to cost even after he's done at the checkout counter?" said Simon Gros, chairman of the Travel Technology Association, which represents the global distribution services and online travel industries.

The harder airlines make it for consumers to compare, "the greater opportunity you have to get to higher prices," said Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, whose members include corporate travel managers.

Now the Obama administration is wading into the issue. The Department of Transportation is considering whether to require airlines to provide fee information to everyone with whom they have agreements to sell their tickets. A decision originally scheduled for next month has been postponed to May, as regulators struggle with a deluge of information from airlines opposed to regulating fee information, and from the travel industry and consumer groups that support such a requirement.

Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines ? with backing from industry trade associations ? are asking the Supreme Court to reverse an appeals court ruling forcing them to include taxes in their advertised fares. The appeals court upheld a Transportation Department rule that went in effect nearly a year ago that ended airlines' leeway to advertise a base airfare and show the taxes separately, often in smaller print. Airlines say the regulations violate their free-speech rights.

At the heart of the debate is a desire by airlines to move to a new marketing model in which customers don't buy tickets based on price alone. Instead, following the well-worn path of other consumer companies, airlines want to mine personal data about customers in order to sell them tailored services. You like to sit on the aisle and to ski, so how would you like to fly to Aspen with an aisle seat and a movie, no extra baggage charge for your skis, and have a hotel room and a pair of lift tickets waiting for you, all for one price? You're a frequent business traveler. How about priority boarding, extra legroom, Internet access and a rental car when you arrive?

"Technology is changing rapidly. We are going to be part of the change," said Sharon Pinkerton, vice president of Airlines for America, which represents most U.S. carriers. "We want to be able to offer our customers a product that's useful to them, that's customized to meet their needs, and we don't think (the Transportation Department) needs to step in."

If airlines have their way, passengers looking for ticket prices may have to reveal a lot more information about themselves, such as their age, marital status, gender, nationality, travel history and whether they're flying for business or leisure. The International Air Transport Association, whose 240 member airlines cover 84 percent of global airline traffic, adopted standards at a meeting earlier this month in Geneva for such information gathering by airlines as well as by travel agents and ticketing services that would relay the data to airlines and receive customized fares in return.

"Airlines want, and expect, their (ticket) distribution partners to offer passengers helpful contextual information to make well-informed purchase decisions, reducing the number of reservations made based primarily or exclusively on price," said a study commissioned by the association.

Consumer advocates question how airlines would safeguard the personal information they gather, and they worry that comparison shopping for the cheapest air fares will no longer be feasible.

"It's like going to a supermarket where before you get the price, they ask you to swipe your driver's license that shows them you live in a rich zip code, you drive a BMW, et cetera," Mitchell said. "All this personal information on you is going out to all these carriers with no controls over what they do with it, who sees it and so on."

The airline association said consumers who choose not to supply personal information would still be able to see fares and purchase tickets, though consumer advocates said those fares would probably be at the "rack rate" ? the travel industry's term for full price, before any discounts.

It's up to individual airlines whether they price fares differently for travelers who don't provide personal information, said Perry Flint, a spokesman for the international airline association.

The stakes, of course, are enormous. Since 2000, U.S. airlines have lost money for more years than they've made profits. Fee revenue has made a big difference in their bottom lines. Globally, airlines raked in an estimated $36 billion this year in ancillary revenue, which includes baggage fees and other a la carte services as well as sales of frequent flyer points and commissions on hotel bookings, according to a study by Amadeus, a global distribution service, and the IdeaWorksCompany, a U.S. firm that helps airlines raise ancillary revenue. U.S. airlines reported collecting nearly $3.4 billion in baggage fees alone in 2011.

One expense airlines would like to eliminate is the $7 billion a year they pay global distribution systems to supply flight and fare information to travel agents and online booking agents like Expedia. Airlines want to deal more directly with online ticket sellers and travel agents, who dominate the lucrative business travel market. Justice Department officials have acknowledged an investigation is underway into possible anti-trust violations by distribution companies.

Airlines also have been cracking down on websites that help travelers manage their frequent flier accounts. The sites use travelers' frequent flier passwords to obtain balances and mileage expiration dates, and then display the information in a way that makes it easier for travelers to figure out when it makes more sense to buy a ticket or to use miles.

"What the airlines are trying to do right now is reinvent the wheel so they can hold all their information close to their chest," said Charles Leocha, founder of the Consumer Travel Alliance. "As we move forward in a world of IT, the ownership of passenger data is like gold to these people."

By withholding information like fee prices, he said, "we are forced to go see them, and then we are spoon-fed what they want to feed us."

Durning, king of character actors, dies in NYC

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Charles Durning grew up in poverty, lost five of his nine siblings to disease, barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.

His hard life and wartime trauma provided the basis for a prolific 50-year career as a consummate Oscar-nominated character actor, playing everyone from a Nazi colonel to the pope to Dustin Hoffman's would-be suitor in "Tootsie."

Durning, who died Monday at age 89 in New York, got his start as an usher at a burlesque theater in Buffalo, N.Y. When one of the comedians showed up too drunk to go on, Durning took his place. He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as heard the audience laughing.

He told The Associated Press in 2008 that he had no plans to stop working. "They're going to carry me out, if I go," he said.

Durning's longtime agent and friend, Judith Moss, told The Associated Press that he died of natural causes in his home in the borough of Manhattan.

Although he portrayed everyone from blustery public officials to comic foils to put-upon everymen, Durning may be best remembered by movie audiences for his Oscar-nominated, over-the-top role as a comically corrupt governor in 1982's "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."

Many critics marveled that such a heavyset man could be so nimble in the film's show-stopping song-and-dance number, not realizing Durning had been a dance instructor early in his career. Indeed, he had met his first wife, Carol, when both worked at a dance studio.

The year after "Best Little Whorehouse," Durning received another Oscar nomination, for his portrayal of a bumbling Nazi officer in Mel Brooks' "To Be or Not to Be." He was also nominated for a Golden Globe as the harried police lieutenant in 1975's "Dog Day Afternoon."

He won a Golden Globe as best supporting TV actor in 1991 for his portrayal of John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald in the TV film "The Kennedys of Massachusetts" and a Tony in 1990 as Big Daddy in the Broadway revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

Durning had begun his career on stage, getting his first big break when theatrical producer Joseph Papp hired him for the New York Shakespeare Festival.

He went on to work regularly, if fairly anonymously, through the 1960s until his breakout role as a small town mayor in the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning play "That Championship Season" in 1972.

He quickly made an impression on movie audiences the following year as the crooked cop stalking con men Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the Oscar-winning comedy "The Sting."

Dozens of notable portrayals followed. He was the would-be suitor of Dustin Hoffman, posing as a female soap opera star in "Tootsie;" the infamous seller of frog legs in "The Muppet Movie;" and Chief Brandon in Warren Beatty's "Dick Tracy." He played Santa Claus in four different movies made for television and was the pope in the TV film "I Would be Called John: Pope John XXIII."

"I never turned down anything and never argued with any producer or director," Durning told The Associated Press in 2008, when he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Other films included "The Front Page," ''The Hindenburg," ''Breakheart Pass," ''North Dallas Forty," ''Starting Over," ''Tough Guys," ''Home for the Holidays," ''Spy Hard" and 'O Brother Where Art Thou?"

Durning also did well in television as a featured performer as well as a guest star. He appeared in the short-lived series "The Cop and the Kid" (1975), "Eye to Eye" (1985) and "First Monday" (2002) as well as the four-season "Evening Shade" in the 1990s.

"If I'm not in a part, I drive my wife crazy," he acknowledged during a 1997 interview. "I'll go downstairs to get the mail, and when I come back I'll say, 'Any calls for me?'"

Durning's rugged early life provided ample material on which to base his later portrayals. He was born into an Irish family of 10 children in 1923, in Highland Falls, N.Y., a town near West Point. His father was unable to work, having lost a leg and been gassed during World War I, so his mother supported the family by washing the uniforms of West Point cadets.

The younger Durning himself would barely survive World War II.

He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

"Too many bad memories," he told an interviewer in 1997. "I don't want you to see me crying."

Tragedy also stalked other members of his family. Durning was 12 when his father died, and five of his sisters lost their lives to smallpox and scarlet fever.

A high school counselor told him he had no talent for art, languages or math and should learn office skills. But after seeing "King Kong" and some of James Cagney's films, Durning knew what he wanted to do.

Leaving home at 16, he worked in a munitions factory, on a slag heap and in a barbed-wire factory.

Durning and his first wife had three children before divorcing in 1972. In 1974, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Amelio.

He is survived by his children, Michele, Douglas and Jeannine. The family planned to have a private family service and burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Fix It Yourself With These Home Improvement Tips | Roofers ...

TIP! It?s not always a good idea to fix leaks on your own. Use a container that is big enough to hold the liquid and contact a professional plumber.

Virtually every challenge that life presents you with is a lot easier to tackle when you have a clear understanding of the process involved in overcoming it. This is especially pertinent when it comes to home improvement. You don?t want to be stuck with a leaking roof or broken basement stair. Check out these improvement tips before you begin any project.

TIP! If you have cords on your blinds, cut of the extra. These cords can be a hazard to children and pets if they become tangled in them.

Spend some time shopping around for the best deals on the best products to use in your home prior to buying anything. For example, new flooring prices can greatly vary. There are supply stores that give out discount and you could also look for bargain places that could help you.

TIP! Safety should be your top priority whenever you are doing a home improvement project. Following these precautions ensures that you and your property are protected at all times.

If your main living area is carpeted, you should avoid leaving the curtains opened day in and day out. The sunlight can actually bleach your carpet, leaving lighter spots where the light most often hits the fibers. Instead, try to leave curtains and drapes open only in the early morning or late evening. Another alternative is to position your furniture in ways that block out sunlight.

TIP! You will save a ton of money by living in your house while you complete home improvements, so try to stick to one room at a time. This makes it easier to live in your own home, unless you have only one bathroom.

Be sure to turn off your water main before you begin working on your water pipes. First, locate your home?s shutoff valves. Use them to turn off the water. If you don?t, you could have a very expensive flood on your hands.

TIP! When it comes to home improvement, get creative and figure out what you are looking to accomplish ahead of time. This makes the work itself more efficient by freeing you from making design decisions and letting you concentrate on doing the job at hand.

Frequently used rooms should have ceiling fans installed for optimal air circulation. These fans can help save energy from running the air conditioner and they can also push warm air down in the winter months. You can either push air down or pull it up with a ceiling fan.

TIP! Use a floor lamp in place of table lamps to free up space on your end tables and night stands. Floor lamps can be moved to your desired location, while a table lamp uses table space.

The good thing about home projects is that they are relatively easy to do. Of course, you should not take it for granted that anyone can successfully undertake any project, regardless of complexity. At the very least, this article should have inspired you to appreciate the importance of preparation and knowledge in your next project. Now, grab a hammer, and start nailing!

Self Improvement Advice You Can Use Now - Empower Network

It can be difficult to admit that your behavior is unacceptable and that you need to change and make amends. How your personal life develops depends on the effort you put into it, but how do you start? Follow the information you are shown here, and make a start on the path you seek.

You can?t tend to others needs until your own needs are met. No matter what point you are in on your journey, you should always take time to breathe.

As you work to develop yourself as an individual, continue to remind yourself that you are well worth the effort. You must realize that doing your best is what you deserve. When you complete your journey you?ll be secure in the knowledge that you did the best you could and no regrets are necessary.

TIP! Define and chart your progress meticulously. Being able to clearly observe your progress is a great motivator.

It is important that you feel comfortable using the abilities that you have. Everyone has unique strengths, which helps to make this world a better and more diverse place. Don?t worry about the skills you haven?t acquired yet, focus your attention on the skills you are already good at.

If you are depressed, pay attention to your complex carb intake and boost it. If you are not getting enough carbs, you might have a low serotonin level. This can also be achieved by upping your intake of raw fruits and veggies, legumes and whole grains.

Look for pieces of writing or prose that were created for motivation. In certain cases, this could take the form of religious volumes, in others, it could be a collection of historical quotations. You may need help staying on top of life and keeping your mind clear, and a trusted book whose words have meaning to you is a great resource to fall back on.

TIP! Picture how your life is right now and where you want it to be in the future. See your shortcomings.

Your body?s health and your mental health are two sides of the same coin, and each has a close effect on the other. Make sure you treat your body properly: follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Don?t forget that a healthy body helps ensure a healthy mind.

In order to have a lifestyle that you love, set goals that you are sure that you can accomplish. If you find what your weaknesses are, you can work to eliminate them and become a better person.

There is one key strategy to consider, no matter what your individual goals for self improvement. No matter what other steps you take, the one critical decision you must make is to be active in your life, not a bystander. Being a passive observer to the world around you removes you from the game entirely. Do not let that happen.

TIP! When building a personal development plan, it is important to consider your personal values. When you focus on things that don?t matter to you, your goals will never truly make sense.

Overreacting to a situation will cause you unnecessary stress. Before you become stressed, analyze the situation. Mistakes are rarely ever fatal. They can be fixed or dealt with. Don?t focus on the things you have lost. Instead, focus on the things you have and are looking to attain.

Choose just one thing that you want to change about yourself. You stand a better chance of making real progress by focusing on a single issue, even if there are others you also want to address. This focus also improves the long-term sustainability of your self improvement, because changing yourself one issue at a time will result in a gradual change that is easier to adjust to.

Decide what it is that you want to do with your life and do it. You can put all the thought into it and devise a perfect plan for life but if you never put it into action, then you will not see results. Identify your goals and take the necessary actions to make it happen.

TIP! Respect your body?s boundaries in pursuit of any goal you might have. You should give it your very best effort and you need to know when you are giving too much.

Leadership is essential in your personal development. The key to being a leader is influence, according to most people. Look at your journey of leadership. Which events had the most impact on the way you live your life? How have those events changed you, if at all? What are the things about you that make you a great fit for a team? Answering these questions should help you realize how you can improve yourself as a leader and a team member.

As you have probably realized, the process of self improvement is far from easy. However, as long as you are motivated and have access to an inspirational support system, the experience should be less challenging, and you should learn a great deal while on your journey. Use the above tips to get started on the road to success.

P.S.-If you love personal development and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging with it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions ===> Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass personal development plan in the industry?s history!

    Adele Trademarks Her Name

    Adele
    Gareth Catermole, Getty Images

While she still hasn?t revealed the name of her son, who born in October, British singer Adele has reportedly trademarked her own moniker. She has done so in order to protect it, so that savvy marketers can?t use her name to sell perfume, jewelry or other items without her consent. She doesn?t want to be associated with products she doesn?t endorse and doesn?t want her fanbase ?tricked? into thinking she is involved based on the usage of her name.

It?s essentially a move to prevent a company from creating an item and then using her image and her fame to sell it. With a trademark in place, she can take legal action against anyone who attempts to use her name.

The Sun reports that an unnamed source shared the news of Adele?s decision, saying, ?She doesn?t want anyone exploiting her name by using it on products which may trick punters into thinking she?s involved with it.?

This isn?t a surprising decision, given Adele?s fierce desire to avoid the trappings of stardom. She has said that she is a singer, not a pop star, and that she doesn?t believe in showing off one?s body in order to sell records. Clearly, she feels the same way about ancillary items like perfumes and clothing lines.

Many singers have business portfolios featuring products and endorsements. But Adele is too focused on, you know, singing and having the best-selling album in a decade in the form of ?21? to worry about that stuff.

Fifty-six arrested for raid on Kenyan coastal village

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Fifty-six people have been arrested on suspicion of killing 30 villagers, including women and children, on the coast of Kenya, police said on Saturday.

Friday's violent clash fuelled international concern over security in the east African state ahead of elections next year. Raiders, settled farmers from the Pokomo ethnic group, attacked semi-nomadic Orma pastoralists with guns, machetes and spears.

The two groups have fought for years over access to grazing, farmland and water, but human rights activists blame the latest violence on politicians seeking to drive away parts of the local population they believe will vote for rivals in national elections due in March.

The United States, which sees Kenya as an important ally in a volatile region facing the threat of al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia, issued a statement roundly condemning the violence. A statement from White House spokesman Jay Carney said:

"The United States condemns in the strongest terms the renewed violence in Kenya's Tana River region ... This latest incident represents a disturbing escalation of the tragic violence witnessed by these communities in August and September."

It added: "With historic elections approaching in March, peace and stability are essential to Kenya's continued progress. The United States urges the people of Kenya to assert their rights through peaceful means, as provided for in Kenya's constitution, so that all Kenyans may realize a secure, democratic, and prosperous future."

After Kenya's disputed 2007 national elections 1,200 people were killed and many thousands more were driven from their homes.

Survivors described Friday's raid. Hamisi Abdul, an Orma, said of the attack by the Pokomo: "They hacked everyone they came across with machetes and spears and shot indiscriminately at us, even as we scampered to seek safety in the bushes. It was confusion. We didn't know which direction they were coming from." Abdul, 27, is in hospital nursing two bullet wounds on his left arm and shoulder.

Police said 11 Pokomo had also died in Friday's violence which they described as a reprisal raid following a series of clashes in August in which more than 100 people died.

They added that the dead among the Orma included six women and 13 children.

"We launched a major overnight man hunt for the attackers and arrested 56 suspects who we believe were involved in the attacks," said Robert Kitur, Coast region deputy police chief.

"Several of them had various body injuries like cuts, confirming that they participated in the attacks."

The suspects were arrested at their homes and a nearby forest where they had gone to hide, he said.

"We also recovered an AK 47 rifle, three rounds of ammunition, hundreds of arrows, bows, spears and machetes. We shall arraign them in court next week to face various charges top among them murder," he said.

President Mwai Kibaki has instructed security forces to prevent further deaths. Police sent an additional team of 200 paramilitary officers to the region to disarm the fighters.

Prolonged trouble on the coast may affect Kenya's vital tourism industry, already damaged by the kidnappings of Western tourists from beach resorts by Somali gunmen and grenade attacks in the port city of Mombasa.

'Extinct' whale found: Odd-looking pygmy whale traced back 2 million years

Extinct whale found? Well, sort of. Scientists have traced the lineage of the pygmy right whale back to an ancient family of whales called cetotheres, who were thought to be extinct.

The pygmy right whale, a mysterious and elusive creature that rarely comes to shore, is the last living relative of an ancient group of whales long believed to be extinct, a new study suggests.

The findings, published Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help to explain why the enigmatic marine mammals look so different from any other living whale.

"The living pygmy right whale is, if you like, a remnant, almost like a living fossil," said Felix Marx, a paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "It's the last survivor of quite an ancient lineage that until now no one thought was around."

    Living fossil

The relatively diminutive pygmy right whale, which grows to just 21 feet (6.5 meters) long, lives out in the open ocean. The elusive marine mammals inhabit the Southern Hemisphere and have only been spotted at sea a few dozen times. As a result, scientists know almost nothing about the species' habits or social structure.

The strange creature's arched, frownlike snout makes it look oddly different from other living whales. DNA analysis suggested pygmy right whales diverged from modern baleen whales such as the blue whale and the humpback whale between 17 million and 25 million years ago. However, the pygmy whales' snouts suggested they were more closely related to the family of whales that includes the bowhead whale. Yet there were no studies of fossils showing how the pygmy whale had evolved, Marx said. [In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales]

To understand how the pygmy whale fit into the lineage of whales, Marx and his colleagues carefully analyzed the skull bones and other fossil fragments from pygmy right whales and several other ancient cetaceans.

The pygmy whale's skull most closely resembled that of an ancient family of whales called cetotheres that were thought to have gone extinct around 2 million years ago, the researchers found. Cetotheres emerged about 15 million years ago and once occupied oceans across the globe.

The findings help explain how pygmy whales evolved and may also help shed light on how these ancient "lost" whales lived. The new information is also a first step in reconstructing the ancient lineage all the way back to the point when all members of this group first diverged, he said.
