Vigil planned to remember Paterno 1 year later

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? From bumper stickers to signs posted by a few businesses to the occasional T-shirt, reminders of Joe Paterno sprinkle Happy Valley.

Most cues are subtle enough to make an outsider look twice. Like the decals with the outline of the bespectacled Paterno's distinctive face, or the shirt with the image of the longtime Penn State coach's trademark look of rolled-up khakis and sneakers.

A year after his death, Paterno and a reputation tarnished in the aftermath of the child sex abuse scandal involving retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky remain sensitive topics for groups of alumni, former players, staffers and community residents.

The Hall of Fame coach died of lung cancer on Jan. 22, 2012, at age 85. On Tuesday ? exactly a year after his passing ? community residents have organized a vigil at a downtown mural that includes a depiction of Paterno.

A family spokesman has said the Paternos would not take part, and remain in privacy.

Their supporters, though, spoke up at a recent meeting of the university's Board of Trustees.

Most critics are angered by how school leaders handled Paterno's ouster as coach and the explosive findings of the internal investigation led by former FBI director Louis Freeh that put part of the blame on Paterno.

Others say the school hasn't done enough to honor a 46-year career in which Paterno was known for focusing on academics and philanthropy as well as football.

"The university should lead the way and not sit in silence," said Ed Stine, 62, of Gaithersburg, Md., a member of the alumni watchdog group Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship. He was one at least one of at least four dozen audience members who applauded or praised speakers who paid tribute to Paterno at the meeting.

The man who built Penn State's program into one of college football's marquee brands was fired in November 2011, days after Sandusky's arrest on molestation and other charges. The trustees had said Paterno was ousted in part because he had a moral obligation to pass on to police outside the university a 2002 allegation of sexual assault by Sandusky that was relayed to Paterno by a graduate assistant.

Sandusky was convicted in June on dozens of criminal counts, crimes that authorities said occurred on and off campus. In July, Freeh accused Paterno and three former school administrators of concealing allegations against Sandusky to protect the school's image.

The NCAA took unprecedented action two weeks later in levying strict sanctions including a four-year bowl ban, strict scholarship cuts and a $60 million fine on the university. College sports' governing body also vacated 111 wins under Paterno, erasing what had been his major college record of 409 career victories.

Paterno's family has vehemently denied Freeh's conclusions and has maintained the coach would not take part in a cover-up. They have said they expect to release a response to Freeh's report in the near future.

The trustees have maintained over the past year that they intend to honor Paterno at some point. When asked last week, a couple trustees cited ongoing legal issues related to the scandal.

"There's going to be a time and a place to do that, and I don't think that's right now yet," trustees chairman Keith Masser said last week.

University leaders continue to navigate tricky issues as they try rebuild Penn State's image. In the eyes of some national columnists and other critics outside Pennsylvania or the Penn State community, Paterno's name has been forever soiled.

A survey of alumni conducted for the school by an external public relations firm found that more than eight in 10 alumni remained positive toward Penn State, though that's down from nine in 10 in 2009. The survey also found that "recent events" still had a negative impact overall on the feelings of alumni, though the impact was less pronounced in December than in the last survey taken in May.

About 75 percent of respondents also said the school should publicly recognize Paterno for his decades of service to the school, down from 87 percent in May. The survey of 1,172 alumni was taken online and over the telephone, with a margin of error that was 2.86 percent.

"We still have an overwhelming majority of people who say he should be honored," said trustee Anthony Lubrano, who has long voiced support for Paterno and his family. He joined the board last summer with the backing of alumni critical of trustees who fired Paterno.

"It's important for us to address if we're going to heal and move forward," Lubrano said.

At the least, the football program that appeared to be in peril after the sanctions has regained its footing under Paterno's successor, Bill O'Brien. The former New England Patriots offensive coordinator conducted a masterful job leading Penn State to an 8-4 season and keeping most of the team together following the penalties.

"It was pretty impressive," said Terry Pegula, a proud Penn State donor and the owner of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. "To be down there, in the middle of that, wasn't a good situation. Even the students were feeling bad. So Bill turned into the shining light in the whole thing. He had a lot of pressure on him and he did a heck of a job."

Al Pacino has been signed to play Paterno in a movie about the late coach. Producer Edward R. Pressman said last week that Brian De Palma will direct "Happy Valley," the tentative title of the film, based on Joe Posnanski's best-seller "Paterno," which followed Paterno's final years as his career ended with the sex abuse scandal.

Since the season's end in late November, questions have been raised again about the sanctions and Freeh's report. Gov. Tom Corbett ? a trustee by virtue of his elected office ? has sued the NCAA in federal court to have the sanctions overturned.

Lubrano and longtime trustee Alvin Clemens, who was on the board in November 2011, drew applause when paying tribute to Paterno last week.

The tributes at the meeting were appropriate, said trustee Paul Suhey, captain of the 1979 football team and another November 2011 trustee. He hoped there would be "a time when (the board) can honor Paterno more" after addressing lingering problems from the scandal.

The Best Flood Insurance Ever? This House Rises With the Water
Construction technology that?s been tried and tested in the marine industry is starting to appear in architecture.

amphibious house, floating house

The Earth hasn?t quite reached Waterworld status yet, but between events like Hurricane Sandy, super typhoons in the Western Pacific, and England?s wettest year on record, our spinning blue marble experienced quite its share of extreme weather events, particularly flooding, in 2012.

In Britain, they?ve decided to dive right in to try and deal with this issue, and The Guardian reports that in one area of the country there?s a scheme that ?proposes homes around marshes, squares that are designed to become ponds, and parks that become small lakes.?

Perhaps even more daring is a proposal for a floating, or amphibious, house from Baca Architects, a firm that?s recognized for innovation in flood-resilient and adaptable architecture and spatial planning. ?We initially set up our firm with the aim to create more sustainable architecture and mitigate climate change,? Baca partner Robert Barker tells TakePart. ?We soon identified the need to deal with the effects of climate change too, and one of the most devastating effects is flood risk.?

Pledge To Do Your Part To Prevent Climate Change

He went on to explain that, ?Baca Architects established the LifE (Long-term Initiatives for Flood-risk Environments) in 2005 to identify ways in which the construction industry could help tackle rising carbon dioxide emissions and adapt to climate change?and in particular to flood risk. We secured funding from the U.K. Government to develop these ideas with an expert team in 2007.?

Barker said the concept of the amphibious house is based upon the Archimedes Principle of Buoyancy and is developed from boat technologies. An amphibious house rests on the ground on fixed foundations, but if a flood occurs, the entire building rises up in its dock and floats there, buoyed by the floodwater.

For this to work, ?The upper part of the house is a lightweight timber construction that rests on a concrete hull, creating a free-floating pontoon, while the whole house is set between four ?dolphins,? permanent vertical guideposts to keep it in place,? says Barker. ?These guideposts, more normally found on marinas, have been integrated with the design and are a visible feature on the exterior of the building.?

The house is fronted by a riverside garden that has a number of terraces that step down from the house to the water?s edge. The terraces are set at different levels that will incrementally flood when the river rises from its banks. Barker says this is ?part of the practice?s ?intuitive landscape? philosophy, that seeks to shape the spaces around settlements so that they can flood in a predetermined way.?

He adds, ?This allows residents to be more conscious of their natural environment and in turn raise their awareness to flood risk. The lowest terrace will be planted with reeds, another with shrubs and plants, another will be lawn, and the highest level will afford a patio with access into the dining room.?

In terms of practicality, Barker explained that while floating construction is tried and tested in the marine industry, its application in architecture is relatively new.

?The Dura Vermeer Group constructed the first generation of the dwelling in Maasbommel in the Netherlands in 2005, consisting of a 32 amphibious dwellings, and 14 floating homes, built on the side of a dyke using floating bases that were anchored to mooring posts. Designed to accommodate a water level difference of up to five and a half meters, the properties successfully performed as designed in the Dutch floods of February 2011,? he says.

Amphibious construction to date has only been used in small buildings but it has the potential to overcome flood risk on a much larger scale by creating whole floating platforms, says Barker. ?This could provide a cost-effective solution to regenerating or preserving important sites where having to relocate residents and communities would have dire social or economic consequences.?

And as Philip Atkinson, a planning consultant, told The Guardian, ?The levels are rising, so everyone has to understand we have to start living with the water.?

Zinesters unite at Berkeley City College event

?If you have ever been interested in producing your own low-budget publication or want to meet others with the same interest, check out the East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest, happening Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 - 5 at Berkeley City College.

The festival was created when Tomas Moniz of Rad Dad Zine was at the SF Zine Fest three years ago with a few members of the local zine community. They realized an East Bay event was needed since over half of the ?tablers? were from the East Bay, and what was then called the East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair was born.

Moniz, who teaches English at Berkeley City College, sponsored the event this year along with the Rock Paper Scissors Collective, an Oakland-based community art collective. ?It?s a great way to connect with other local artists and zinesters,? Moniz said. ?It?s good for people interested in creating art and writing to get together.?

Highlights of this year?s event include a reading and discussion with writer Adam Mansbach and a slide lecture with artist Eric Drooker.

Mansbach is author of the #1 New York Times bestseller adult children?s book ?Go the F**k to Sleep,? and the novels ?Angry Black White Boy,? ?The End of the Jews,? and the upcoming ?Rage is Back.?

Painter and graphic novelist Drooker will explore the role of artist as activist in the slide lecture, ?Art is a Weapon,? showing his evolution from street artist to graphic novelist, to frequent cover artist for The New Yorker magazine.

Workshops will be held on silkscreening, letterpressing, cartooning, DIY vegan body care, and a panel discussion on how to get alternative books and zines into libraries. Over 60 tablers will showcase their wares, including artists, comics, ?zinesters,? as well as local bookpresses.

The festival, which is always free to the public and kid-friendly, features affordable merchandise?most zines run about $2 and many pieces of original artwork are available for $15- $20. Tablers will also frequently trade for merchandise.

?Trade is such an important part of the zine community,? Moniz said. ?If someone has a zine you want, you offer to trade one of yours for it.?

PIERS MORGAN DEPORTED BACK TO ENGLAND | Weekly World ...

The White House, responding to a petition, is deporting CNN host Piers Morgan back to England.

The White House, responding to a petition, is deporting CNN host Piers Morgan back to England.

A petition was posted on White House?s We the People forum asking CNN?host Piers Morgan to be deported back to England. The forum was created by gun-ownership supporters after Morgan?s support of increased gun control after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

morgan_deportedD

The Obama administration issued a response saying that Piers Morgan has the right to express his opinion, but he?s acting like ?a little child? and is ?inciting gun owners, so we are deporting him immediately.?

Obama was visibly upset with Morgan when he made the announcement that he is deporting him.

morgan_deportedE

This man has offered to escort Morgan back to England:

morgan_deportedC

White House press secretary Jay Carney reportedly said,??President Obama believes the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. ?And Piers Morgan is not the right person to lead a debate on this issue. ?Morgan is debasing the argument for gun control and on top of that? he?s annoying as hell.?

Over 1,00,000 signed virtually the petition to deport Morgan back to his home of England.

morgan_deportedB

Piers Morgan has been a flop as a replacement for Larry King. ? Even Larry King took a swipe at Morgan reportedly saying, ?He?s very different from me. I never gave opinions. Piers gives his opinions. The show is all about him. ?He?s basically just a British blowhard.?

Morgan is disgraced former tabloid editor and ex-talent show judge. ?He worked at News of the World, which was shuttered during the phone hacking scandal, and the?Daily Mirror, from which he was fired for publishing fake photos of British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners, and one understands that Morgan is incapable of nuance.

In recent weeks, Morgan has had fierce gun control arguments with his guests, including Alex Jones, Matt Druge and Jesse Ventura. ? Ted Nugent has offered to take Morgan deer hunting in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. ??I?ll give him a first-hand lesson in hunting. ?He?ll be a member of the NRA when I?m done with him,? ?Nugent reportedly said.

The only problem with deporting Morgan back to England: ? they don?t want him either. ?Afghanistan leader, Hamid Karzai, said that he is welcome in his country any time ? and he won?t need a gun.

Pink Smog Shoppe wedding: Carol + Byron

10 Jan

Jenny Packham?s Cascade gown and Kate Spade blue bow heels

Not that we?re biased because we live in LA, but the Smog Shoppe really is a fun wedding venue. It?s decorated with funky and retro tchotkes, a live succulent wall, it?s cozy and intimate, and it?s so easy to have both your ceremony & reception in the same spot. Every time we see a wedding from the shoppe we get excited to see how each couple makes the space their own.?Sweet Emilia Jane did a fabulous job with designing the florals and?Carol + Byron?s ?fun party? vibe while also incorporating details from their Chinese culture. It?s simply adorable!

blue chevron wedding invitations

For their wedding invitations, Carol + Byron started with a free printable download with a bold chevron pattern. With the help of friends they adjusted it to suit their tastes then used the design everywhere pretty paper could be involved ? their programs, menus, escort cards, and table names.

I heard this many times before but it didn?t stick so I?ll say it again! ?The whole day and night is a blur and you really want to be able to enjoy it and hang out with all of your guests. So, hire a wedding coordinator if you can and if you can?t then assign tasks to family and friends. They will be happy to help you and be part of the wedding. Make sure that you don?t have to deal with any tasks like paying your vendors or keeping track of the schedule. Plan what you can beforehand, hand out assignments, and have one person be the main contact person. Just enjoy the moment because the next day it will all feel like an amazing dream! Also there may be things that go wrong but don?t fixate on them! ?The next day we worried about what went wrong and turns out we were the only ones who noticed or cared!

Great advice that?s always worth repearting. Congratulations Carol + Byron!

China's SUV boom is rolling strong?just ask the metal-makers ...

China seems to be getting the hand of this consumption thing just fine.?The latest bit of evidence?

Comments earlier this week by Klaus Kleinfeld, boss of aluminum firm Alcoa, whose aluminum is used in car production. The company expects sales in its automotive segment to grow 7% to 10% in 2013. ?This is mainly driven by stronger SUV sales,? company executives said on the conference call. ?The wealth[y] or middle class plays into it as well as the general uptick in the Chinese economy.?

SUVs should remain the fastest-growing bit of the Chinese car market, ?as it is ?under-penetrated? and caters to the preference of Chinese consumers for roomier vehicles, while smaller cities will become more important for sales,? Steve Man, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Nomura Holdings, recently told Bloomberg. And any number of manufacturers?both domestic and foreigners such as GM?s Cadillac brand?are aiming to capture their fair share of the boom.

But what?s driving (sorry) the demand for SUVs in China? The Guardian offered some nice color on how Chinese car buyers make their decisions in a story last month.

Chinese motorists know they must impress, whether they are seeking partners for romance or business. Roll up in an Audi and you ensure a basic degree of respect. Arrive in a domestic Chery QQ hatchback and you are doomed before you get through a client?s door. ?People don?t really think about whether they need a car, but feel they have to have one to show their status,? Zhang?s friend Zhao Cihang tells me at the Mini showroom. Until recently he edited a car website and, although he is a year younger than Zhang, already owns two BMWs, an Audi and a Honda. But, he adds, ?I still think about new ones. I?d like an SUV?the biggest kind.?

Water coming in under foundation - DIY Home Improvement ...

I have a shed I want to convert into an office or soundproof band room but the slab is set slightly below the ground/grass level. Whenever it rains heavily or I water the yard the water runs over the slab and under the baseboard of the framing on the concrete slab. It has rotted the baseboard out so I know I'll have to replace it . Is there a way I can seal the water from coming in . ? I'll try and figure out a way to upload pictures.

Embattled Communications Chief Resigns, Says DISD "Not the ...

After just one rocky semester, the head of communications for the Dallas school district says she is stepping down.

Jennifer Sprague told NBC 5 in an exclusive interview that she needs to focus on family. She said she and her family plan to remain in Dallas.

"Well, Superintendent Mike Miles offered me a great opportunity to come out to Dallas ISD and do some great work and really drive forward the improvements in his improvement plan," she said. "And I accepted the opportunity and moved my family out here from Colorado and just realized over the past couple of weeks -- after some personal reflection time over the holidays -- I just realized that, career-wise, Dallas ISD is not the place for me, and so I look forward to the next chapter of my career."

Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles brought Sprague with him from his previous school district in Colorado.

Her hiring sparked controversy from the beginning. Her salary -- $185,000 -- was about $100,000 more than she made in her previous job, and Miles hired her without interviewing any other candidates.

Sprague said she didn't necessarily think her salary would be so controversial.

"I think that I was hired here for the chief of communications position and it's a cabinet-level position," she said. "But most importantly, I agree with some of the ideas of the board as far as 'pay for performance.' I was asked to come to Dallas ISD to implement his -- Superintendent Miles' -- goals and improvement goals, and that consists of a pay-for-performance plan for our teachers and staff, and I am a huge supporter of that and I agree with the system."

At a news conference in June, Miles defended Sprague's appointment and salary by saying that she represented national-level talent and competency.

"I'm not trying to diss the people who have already been here, but we're getting national-level expertise and we're changing the paradigm of communications," he said.

In that same press conference, Miles said: "If Jennifer Sprague were an ugly, slightly older male with 20 years of experience who had won all these national awards, would any of you in this room make a story of it if he received the same salary as a communications person in Houston ISD?"

Sprague said in her interview with NBC 5 in her rented Pleasant Grove home this week that, in hindsight, there were things she could have said and done differently in the beginning.

"I think the superintendent would agree and, in many cases, there's always things that we could have done better or said differently," she said.

A board meeting in August fired up her naysayers even more. Sprague was criticized for being unprepared to answer questions from trustees.

Sprague said she kept a "laser-like focus" on what she was hired to do through it all.

"We really focused on internal communications, getting the staff on board with the changes and with the Destination 2020 goals and making sure everybody understood the core beliefs," she said.

Sprague didn't elaborate on how Miles responded to her resignation, but said that if she were not resigning, her job would be safe.

And she said she stands by the superintendent.

"Superintendent Miles is a great leader, and he knows what he's doing, and I back him 100 percent," she said.

Sprague said she is looking forward to the next chapter of her career.

"I, again, made the decision to resign based on my family and based on what's best for my family," she said.

My husband asked me this last night before we had sex. The quick background is, we've been going through a lot. Or, I've been going through a lot in the relationship. He's done things that have left me feeling abandoned (the usual things mostly, not meeting needs, love busting, and then some unusual things like saying insane things, neglecting the kids, and lying constantly). I've continued to have sex with him even though I'm not feeling any desire because I want to make this work.

So last night he asks me that question, and I just feel utterly defeated. He's so immature and self-centered, I don't think he even gets that I have feelings or feels any obligation to give me what I need. As long as I'm cooking dinner, cleaning, raising the kids, and giving him sex twice a week, things are perfect as far as he's concerned. But how can things be perfect if I'm in so much pain? I feel like he just doesn't care.

I've told him this, we've talked. None of it seems to make an impression on him. I tried writing, no response. I've bought and read so many of the books recommended here, and he'll read maybe 20 pages and then quit. When we talk, he says he does care and he'll start showing me, but the actions say otherwise. He doesn't even try for a few weeks and then revert back. He never even tries!

Ugh, if it weren't for the kids, I'd give up. Do you guys have any advice??

I want him to care about how I feel, both physically and emotionally. I want him to care about our family and have goals and ideas. I want him to give the kids energy and attention, without me having to initiate every positive interaction for him.

We've seen a few professionals to try to figure out what's going on with him (a neurological illness was suspected at first), but the doctor who did his testing said it looks like a maturity issue to her, not a cognitive one, and she referred us to marriage counseling.

I just don't know how to fix it. How do you make a 38 year old grow up??

So, how did the marriage counselling go?

You can want those things till the cows come home, but I suspect he doesn't give a flying fig about that. And that's what you can expect to continue to see from him. Your choices are to accept the way things are, or start making changes to improve the situation.

I've been afraid that if I stopped having sex with him, that would be an unhealthy way getting his attention. It seems like it goes against all the advice I've read online. But, the sex does feel me leaving resentful, and if there's any chance cutting it off would be a wake up call, I'll take it.

Happysnappy, I feel exactly like I'm bashing my head against a wall. It's awful.

PBear, I get what you're saying. I've spent 3 years having heart to hearts, crying, and asking for changes. We haven't started counseling (together) yet. He went once without me, then cancelled the next session when I told him I wanted to come. We're in his home country right now and I don't speak the language, so I'm kind of dependent on him for setting that up.

I know I look like a total doormat in this situation. I'm just really hesitant to put my foot down because of the kids. And out of fear... I'm not prepared to actually leave him, so I don't want to put it on the table. As it stands, he knows I'll put up with this until the kids are big, so I think he has little motivation to change. I think I need to get myself into a place where I am willing to leave, even though I don't want to. That requires me valuing my happiness over a stable family for my kids, and I'm just not sure I can do it. Well that's not exactly right... I'm very happy with every area of my life except my marriage. So it feels like if I were to leave, or seriously allow myself to consider leaving, then I'm valuing my happiness in a relationship with a man over my kids' happiness.

Not much to say, your husband sounds selfish, but we are only hearing one side. He sounds like he wants a FWB that keeps his house clean and food on the table, that is a relationship, just not very emotional or meaningful.

Ask him if that is what he wants can you get a FWB outside of your home, that may start him thinking. After you mention that tell him you think you two need to seek counseling.

Good luck, sounds like a long term struggle.
