Top tips for saving tax ? Quintas Blog

It is that time of year again when self-employed people are preparing their 2011 tax return, before the online filing deadline of 15 November(today). Therefore it is an appropriate time to revisit the available tax reliefs to ensure that all tax payers, whether self-employed or a PAYE worker, are claiming all their available tax reliefs for 2011.

Most tax reliefs are now allowable at the standard rate of tax ie 20%, but there are some that are still available at the marginal rate ie 41%. They include tax relief on pension payments, nursing home fees, film investment relief and deed of covenants. The balance of the reliefs can be claimed by tax payers as a deduction from the tax they paid in 2011, at a rate of 20%.

The most common reliefs are as follows:

Medical expenses: Family medical expenses can be claimed as a tax deduction at 20%. Including non-routine dental expenses, on receipt of a Form Med 2 from your dentist.

Home carer?s credit: This is claimable by married persons who are jointly assessed and where one spouse works at home to care for children, the aged or incapacitated persons. The relief for 2011 is ?810.

Rent credit: Tax relief may be claimed by tenants for the rent paid in respect of rented residential accommodation which is their sole or main residence. This relief was abolished by the Finance Act 2011, for new tenants but is available on a phased out basis for individuals who were paying qualifying rent under a qualifying tenancy before 7 December 2010. The tax credit for persons under 55 years is a maximum of ?320 for a single person or ?640 for a married couple and for persons over 55 years it is doubled.

Third ?level tuition fees: Tax relief is available in respect of tuition fees paid to an approved college for an approved course. The maximum annual relief is restricted to ?7,000.

Service charges: Tax relief may be claimed on a prior year basis on service charges paid. An upper limit of ?400 applies. The relief has been abolished from 2012 onwards.

Tax payers beware!

When claiming tax relief it is important that you have the relevant documentation to verify the claim, as The Finance Act 2011 introduced new legislation whereby there is now a penalty of ?3,000 payable, by any person who makes a false claim, regardless of how little the refund claim was.

Clarence Clemons' "There's Still Christmas" Selected for Give an Hour's 2012 Holiday Theme Song

Give an Hour partners with Oceangate Records to use its song "There's Still Christmas," featuring Clarence Clemons, for its holiday 2012 fundraising campaign.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 15, 2012

Give an Hour, a national nonprofit organization providing free mental health services to veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, their loved ones, and their communities, has partnered with Oceangate Records to use its song "There's Still Christmas," featuring Clarence Clemons, for its holiday 2012 fundraising campaign. Give an Hour will receive a donation for each purchase or download.

Oceangate Records is proud to contribute to this most worthy organization, which is close to the heart of musician and songwriter Dennis Bourke, a decorated combat veteran who can personally empathize with the cause of Give an Hour. Bourke states that ?when life seems hopeless for veterans struggling with the ghosts and images of their time away, we hope that 'There?s Still Christmas' will bring them some joy and mostly hope that no matter what you?ve endured, there is something wonderful in life to look forward to.?

Give an Hour provides resources to overcome the many obstacles service men and women and their families face upon return from deployment as they seek to recover and reintegrate into their civilian lives. Give an Hour recognizes that the strain of deployments and the stress and of combat affect many more people than just the service member and his or her immediate family. Ripple effects across a service member's social networks are expectable. Spouses and significant others, children, mothers, fathers, and friends ? all can be affected, which means over 20 million Americans might need assistance with the complicated process of reintegration as service members come home. There is no limit to the number of sessions one can receive ? help is available for as long as it is needed.

?We are grateful to Oceangate Records for their generosity in allowing us to share this great song from the ?Big Man,? says Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, founder and president of Give an Hour. ?We know that raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health care happens in many different ways. We need to continue to find ways to reach people with our message and to raise funds to continue our good work, and partnering with Oceangate Records in this way is a wonderful opportunity to do so,? Dr. Van Dahlen adds.

About Oceangate Records

Back in 1981 musicians Jim Nuzzo and Dennis Bourke were blessed to have the opportunity to share some time with Clarence Clemons and record these marvelous Christmas tunes. He poured himself into the project, donning a Santa hat and really capturing the essence of the season. We had hoped that these recordings would have graced the airways back in '81, but we were too late approaching the record labels that year. Subsequently, Clarence's career skyrocketed with the Red Bank Rockers, a hit song with Jackson Browne, and of course his tremendous run with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. With his passing in June 2011, we were all saddened to lose this American rock icon. One of the beauties of recorded music is its eternal power to play on long after the artist is physically gone. Clarence has a parting Christmas gift to us all with these soon to be holiday classics. Open up your hearts and listen to the "Big Man" say Merry Christmas to the world.

Astrophysicist set to launch rocket experiment: Instrument will observe spiral galaxy near Big Dipper's handle

The face-on spiral galaxy M101 in Ursa Major, shown in this photo taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, is the target of Asst. Prof. Timothy Cook?s rocket experiment in November.

Astrophysicist Timothy Cook loves to build things, particularly small scientific satellites and instruments, putting them on a sounding rocket and then shooting them into space.

"How can one not find space experiments exciting?" asks Cook. "I'm hooked on all those things and I pretty much always have been. I'm fortunate to have been surrounded all my life by supportive people, but this is the sort of thing that's so cool you just do it regardless of what people think."

Cook spent the past two decades conducting experiments at Boston University. In January, he joined UMass Lowell's Department of Physics and Applied Physics as an assistant professor, where he will continue to pursue his passion.

"I don't actually build the rocket, just the payload," he notes. "The largest vehicle I've flown something on was a Pegasus rocket, which is launched from a modified L-1011 aircraft over open ocean to deliver a satellite into low-Earth orbit."?

In the pre-dawn hours of Nov. 10, Cook and his research team will be at the Army's White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, ready to launch a NASA-funded science experiment, called IMAGER, which has been five years in the making. They will use a Black Brant IX, an 18-foot-long two-stage sounding rocket capable of carrying up to 1,200 pounds of payload into suborbital flight.

"The success rate for sounding rockets is 80 to 90 percent, which sounds pretty good until you realize that it means a 10 to 20 percent failure rate," says Cook, who is the principal investigator for the NASA project.?"Launch gets to be pretty nerve-wracking!"

Observing the Pinwheel Galaxy in Ultraviolet

The IMAGER's observing target is the distant spiral galaxy M101?also known as NGC 5457 or the "Pinwheel Galaxy"?located about 25 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major, near the Big Dipper's handle.

"Our primary goal is to take images of M101 at different ultraviolet wavelengths," explains Cook.?"We're trying to find out more about dust in M101?that's right, dust.?It turns out that galaxies are pretty dusty and the dust is pretty important.?It blocks a lot of the light from leaving, or even moving around in, the galaxy.?Dust absorbs ultraviolet light particularly well, so with our UV instrument we're particularly sensitive to its effects."

The team is looking to find out if the differences in dust absorption are due to the formation or destruction of the dust. Determining how dust varies from M101's core to its rim will help in understanding the evolutionary history of galaxies.

"Astronomy does generate practical spinoffs, but at its heart, at this point in history, it is more inspirational that practical," notes Cook.?"Astronomy is more about finding our place in the universe, learning about the stunning, awe-inspiringly cool world that we live in."

Cook's team includes co-investigators Supriya Chakrabarti, who joined UMass Lowell's physics faculty in September, and Karl Gordon of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

He adds: "At this point our field operations are the responsibility of three people: Brian Hicks, a UMass Lowell post-doctoral researcher who just graduated from Boston University after launching Supriya's last sounding rocket; Meredith Danowski, a BU graduate student who really is the brains of the operation, and Jason Martel, a mechanical engineer with our group who just moved to UMass Lowell."

New IE Jobs Created by SBETA Partnership

Stimulating business in the current economic climate takes more than hard work and perseverance?it takes partnership. Helping companies to succeed and job creation are the underlying reasons why the San Bernardino Employment Training Agency has chosen to partner with RedFusion Consulting. The Agency understands that getting people back to work is contingent on job availability, which only happens when businesses are successful.

Getting to the root of the problem is why SBETA, an agency governed by the Workforce Investment Board of the City of San Bernardino, is focusing on helping small business grow by improving their basic internal structures, creating strong, stable, and productive companies that will, in turn, stimulate the economy, creating more local jobs. San Bernardino is one the few cities that has been designated as a federally funded LWIA (Local Workforce Investment Area).

There is no shortage of controversy about government involvement in business and economic assistance. The IE has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, and few businesses were growing and adding jobs. While several local, state and federal government agencies have various programs providing money for property improvements or tax incentives, money used for assets may provide a place to do business. However, that does not necessarily translate into additional hiring. The SBETA sponsored program has been able to accomplish this feat successfully.

SBETA?s main goal is to provide a trained workforce for the business employers. The Agency has traditionally trained and placed workers with businesses, so they decided to try an innovative idea to increase growth for businesses in the city. Recognizing that the economy must grow to create jobs to lower the huge unemployment rate, SBETA hired ?independent business consultants experts to help those companies with a chance of growing in this economy.

Hiring experts to assist businesses may be considered a risky investment by some, but the actual risk is minute when compared to many traditional forms of government assistance programs. The premise was that if businesses grew, they would then be able to hire local workers. And it worked.

According to SBETA Executive Director, Dr. Ernest Dowdy, ?Our board, which is made up of at least 51% local business people, has supported us in this vision. It is a risk?hiring business consultants who can deliver such a tall order?but we simply had to innovate. We need positions open so we can fill them, otherwise we would be part of the problem. We like finding solutions.?

To accomplish this goal, the Agency partnered with Ron Burgess and Ray Anderson of RedFusion Consulting. Burgess is an expert in marketing strategy and brand building. Anderson specializes in leadership and management issues. The program is available to companies with ten or more employees and is offered at no cost to the businesses.

The rest is history. Businesses have begun to see a difference as their inner structures have been strengthened and priorities have been addressed. Since the program?s inception, jobs have been created as a direct result of successful partnering consultants with business owners and management leaders.

John St. John, CEO of Systems Technology, Inc., a San Bernardino manufacturer of packaging systems testifies to the success of the program, ?If this program hadn?t been ?free? via the SBETA subsidy, I probably wouldn?t have done it as quickly, but I am glad I did, because it really helped focus our staff and our marketing efforts.?

Marjorie Nielson, CEO of ANCO, International,?a San Bernardino manufacturer of industrial hose couplings for construction, oil supply, sanitary and special applications declared, ?This program got me excited about the business again and encouraged us to expand into markets that we hadn?t explored.?It also got us working toward a comprehensive succession plan.?

?We try to teach business owners to fish?not give them a fish,? states consultant Ray Anderson. ?If we can increase management efficiency and help them understand how to ?institutionalize??that is, how to continue to execute the marketing process?growth could continue for decades. So, the few thousands of dollars we spend on them is more like planting a seed than transplanting the tree.?

Scott Cathey, owner of Brydenscott Metal Products reports that, ?We have received grants to keep us in San Bernardino, which was a real help to our business, but once it?s spent, it?s spent. The SBETA consulting program has, on the other hand, changed the way we grow our business, now and in the future.?

Businesses participating in the program have already hired new people, recognizing increasing or returning revenues during the first six months of the project. Just fifteen, $30,000 jobs would yield three times the new wage base that will be spent on the program, for as many years as that job is maintained.

?I have spent my 25-year consulting career learning what it takes to grow businesses,? states Burgess of RedFusion Consulting, ?The secret sauce is proper market positioning. Add that to good management, hard work and proper marketing execution, and real growth tends to follow. That is what we do for clients.?

?SBETA is really innovating here, by partnering with seasoned consultants, and providing services that a business would not be inclined to buy in a recession. They have broken the ?retreat? mentality that often accompanies recessions. I applaud them for their vision, and of course we are happy to work our tails off to meet the goals. We want them to be pleased. But, more important, is our participation in trying to lift up one of the worst economies in the nation and strengthen companies so they will have jobs to offer to the job seekers in the IE. It gives us real satisfaction that we can change lives,? says Anderson.

Rescue groups educate public at St. Charles pet show

ST. CHARLES ? Big dogs with bows on their collars, little dogs in pink tutus and medium dogs with colorful scarves pranced, played and socialized Saturday while the canines and dog lovers converged at the St. Charles Chicago Pet Show at the Kane County Fairgrounds.

The two-day show featured a variety of vendors for pet products. Pet rescue organizations ? covering dogs, cats and other animals ? raised money for a variety of rescue charities and offered activities such as pony rides, a minizoo, demonstrations of search and rescue dogs and other presentations.

The event was the ticket for Erica Waggoner of Geneva, who was lugging a bag of goodies to take home for her dog, Ziggy, a Boston terrier.

?Oh I saw the cutest potbellied pig,? Waggoner said. ?I might have taken him home if somebody had not already adopted him.?

The show?s goal is for 200 adoption and foster care applicants to sign up, according to the organization?s website, www.chicagopetshow.com.

Rescue groups abounded, each presenting the best of their breeds, from pit bulls to hounds, mutts to purebreds.

Mary Greenwald of True Hearts of Rottweiler Rescue said her group wants to educate the public about owning a Rottweiler, a sturdy dog bred to herd cattle in Germany.

?Many people don?t understand the breed,? said Greenwald, of Grayslake. ?They are great dogs that make great pets ? maybe not for everyone ? you have to know the personality so it?s the right fit.?

Anne Copeland with Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue was among the breed rescue groups featured at the show.

?The dogs that we have are rescued from various situations,? Copeland said. ?They may be puppy mills, rescue dogs. A lot of the mills are shutting down because of new laws. We will take any Cavalier, any condition, any age. Some of the dogs we get are owner turn-ins because their circumstances change. We will take those dogs.?

Copeland said their dogs are fostered in a home to make sure they are healthy, housebroken and get obedience training.

?Especially the mill dogs, they learn what grass is and to sleep on a sofa,? Copeland said. ?They are very loving, very gentle and easy to train because they are very food motivated ? We have rescued over 350 Cavaliers.?

Another rescue group, Second Hand Snoots, was represented by Erica Brown.

?It is an all-breed dog and cat rescue,? Brown said. ?We focus on special needs, injured or sick animals that a lot of rescues can?t necessarily take. And for animal control, [they are] usually the first ones to be euthanized.?

The show?s atmosphere also encouraged pet owners to bring their dogs to socialize and show off.

Teri McDermott-Holzman brought her cocker spaniel, Princess Leia, to see and be seen.

?I?m here because I love dogs,? McDermott-Holzman said. ?I?m buying stuff for the dog and for general entertainment. I love dogs, I love dog people, and I love the idea of rescues.?

There are 20 hours, 50 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Internet Trends Reports Give Nods to Android, Netflix | Madame ...

As 2012 comes to a close, various analysts and research companies are coming out with reports on digital and Internet trends, getting people excited for the future of technology. Mary Meeker, a well-regarded Internet analyst and partner at KPCB, spoke in San Francisco last week and gave a mid-year update to her annual 2012 Internet Trends report that was published in May.

According to TechCrunch, the biggest news from Meeker had to do with the smartphone market, which she forecasts will reach one billion smartphone users by the end of the year. Additionally, with five billion consumers owning feature phones (non-smartphones) at the end of 2012, there is room for this area to grow?and she sees that growth coming for Android phones, not the iPhone.

TechCrunch writes, ?By the end of 2013, Meeker expects there to be 160 million Android devices, 100 million Windows devices, and 80 million iOS devices shipped per quarter.?

Additionally, broadband network company Sandvine released its annual Internet traffic trends report, which included findings about where consumers are spending their time watching online streaming video. In this currently competitive market, companies including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO Go, and more are vying for viewers? attention. But Netflix tops the charts when it comes to traffic on computers and other fixed devices, rather than mobile.

When it comes to residential traffic during peak periods, Netflix had a 33 percent share during the second half of 2012, compared to YouTube with 14.8 percent and much farther down the list, Amazon, with 1.75 percent. Other competitors were not even in the top ten, with Hulu at 1.38 percent and HBO Go coming in with 0.52 percent.

?Audio and video streaming account for 65% of all downstream traffic from 9pm-12am and half of that is Netflix traffic [on North America fixed networks],? said Sandvine CEO Dave Caputo, in a statement about the report.

The Record Of The Pocket Knife 2012 - Work On the Internet

The very first known pocket knives were found at Hallstatt and old back to 600 BC created with a bone manage and raw yet simple foldable knife style. 1st Millennium Romans are acknowledged with creating the first foldable pocket knife. They created for simple holding for military and other travelles on their trips and conquests. They were convenient lightweight and simple to hide however, as the use of sheathed knives became more well-known, the use of pocket knives dropped somewhat into disfavor. The large set sheathed knife created for a more powerful impact then its tiny forerunner the pocket knife. Many decided for this larger tool as there tool of choice.

By the late Sixteenth Millennium, pocket knives started to restore popularity. They were especially well-known in the United States cities farm owners, attorneys, and men from all of all ages started to bring them. The ultimate convenient device, the pocket knife was a useful aid in various projects, such as eating on the go. Pocket knives were also an important device for military throughout United States history. New You are able to and New Hampshire required their militias to bring pocket knives during the United states Trend. Even Henry California carried a pocket knife. The U.S. Deep blue blue started providing pocket knives to mariners during the Municipal War and during WWII, the pocket knife was conventional issue for United states GIs. Useful for so many things this pocket knife was no longer just a set knife they had now added so many useful resources into this lightweight style. Most GI's knives had a can operator, awl, container operator, screwdriver and of course a knife blade. The pocket knife was now becoming an important device and not just knife.

There are many types of pocket knives out there today but the most famous of these is perhaps the Europe Military knife. This multi-purpose knife is a brand of pocket knife or multiple device created in Europe in 1891 but was initially called the Europe Authorities Knife and only became known as the Europe Military Knife after United states military during WWII were unable to articulate the In German name. These knives can contain anything and everything you can imagine all fitted inside a manage with a pivoting procedure. Most conventional knives contain the main knife, a smaller knife, a screwdriver, can operator, container operator, forceps, and tooth pick. The more advanced knives can bring up to 26 items and can even include a USB usb usb drive, LED mild, and digital time.

Although these pocket knives or multi-tools are available many men still opt to bring a simple edition like the port knife which has a simple easy-to-open knife and nothing more or a pen knife. The pen knife was initially designed to cut or improve pen quills for writing. The pen knife is good if you want more than one type of knife.

Men have been holding pocket knife and throwing knife for hundreds of years, but with increased security at the airport and other structures, knives have been vanishing from gent's pouches. Yet these minimal hurdles are not sufficient reason to give up holding a knife completely. The holding of a pocket knife is a useful custom that should be ongoing as long as you follow the proper regulations.

Although these pocket knife or multi-tools are available many men still opt to bring a simple edition like the port knife which has a simple easy-to-open knife and nothing more or a pen knife. The pen knife was initially designed to cut or improve pen quills for writing. The pen knife is good if you want more than one type of throwing knife.

Italy's Monti says he would prefer not to stay on as PM

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's Mario Monti said on Monday he would prefer not to stay on as prime minister after elections in April, despite widespread calls for him to do so.

Monti was named as leader of a technocrat government last November when the financial crisis forced Italian government debt to levels that had triggered bailout requests from other euro zone countries. His government's term ends in March.

Asked at an event organized by the Financial Times in Milan whether he would like to stay in the job, he said: "No."

In September, Monti said he would, out of a sense of responsibility to the country, carry on leading the government if the election did not produce a leader with a clear majority.

"I am seeing that many people do imagine such a scenario," he said, answering a question about whether he would run a new government. "Some like it and some dislike it. I do not have a view on this."

Recent opinion polls show that no party or alliance of parties would win more than 32 percent of votes if the election were held now.

Italy's business community and many politicians support a second term for Monti to lock in structural reforms he has launched and to maintain financial markets' confidence in the economy.

When asked about financial markets, Monti said Italian government bond spreads had reduced dramatically during the last year and could fall further.

"I do not see in Italian fundamentals any reason why the spread should be higher than 150 basis points," he said.

On Monday, 10-year Italian bonds were trading about 365 basis points over 10-year German Bunds, having reached a euro zone record of about 570 basis points last December.

North Carolina QB sets prep mark in 104-80 win

DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) ? Will Grier is still trying to get his head around throwing for a national record 837 yards passing and 10 touchdowns in his team's 104-80 win in a North Carolina high school state playoff game last Friday night.

The Davidson Day High School junior quarterback, being recruited by several top schools around the country, surpassed the mark of 764 yards passing set by Pacific Palisades (Calif.) QB David Koral set in 2000. Davidson Day High advanced to the N.C. Independent Schools' Division II championship game with the win over Harrells Christian.

Grier says "it was craziest thing I've ever been a part of. It was ridiculous."

In the wild game that lasted nearly four hours, the teams combined for 184 points surpassing the existing state mark of 142 set in 1930.

The game ended close to midnight and Grier had no idea he broke any records until the following day.

"My Twitter account just blew up," Grier said.

Grier said it seemed like the game might never end, but that the Wildcats felt unstoppable on offense.

They scored on every possession except one.

"My goal is always to win; I'm not a stat guy," Grier said. "I could really care less about records, just as long as we win. Looking back on it though it was like 'Oh my goodness.' Our offense was quick and we just had one of those nights where we were on. Our offensive line played their best game and the receivers kept making plays. You have to give credit to them."

Chad Grier, Will's father and Davidson Day's head coach, is certainly used to some high-scoring games ? Will has thrown 64 touchdown passes this season, one shy of a state record ?but he said he's never seen anything quite like what happened Friday night.

"I sure didn't come in with a plan for us to score 104 points, and I sure as heck didn't have a plan to give up 80," Grier said.

Given the explosive nature of the offenses, the game was always fairly close with Davidson Day never leading by more than 24 points.

The Wildcats felt like they had to keep scoring on every possession to stay comfortably ahead.

"You have to credit the kids at Harrells Christian," Chad Grier said. "They just kept fighting ? and kept scoring."

As a coach and dad, the elder Grier had to find something to critique his son on after the game.

"He did throw one interception so I told him what a dumb throw that was," Chad Grier said with a laugh. "I told him he has to work on his backside throws. You have to find something."

Grier has scholarship offers from Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Wake Forest and East Carolina, which is his where his father played in college. He's also being recruited by Alabama, Duke, N.C. State and Oregon, among others.

Grier said he hopes to make a decision on where to attend college in the spring.

Oh man, everything looks awesome!!!

Hahahaha

I can't work on my character now, because I have to get ready for work, which you know. But I shall bring a notebook with me and write stuff down. XD I'm sure I'll be too antsy to get to bed when I get home, so you might have it before I go to bed.

This sounds really interesting, I really like the set up and such, sounds very cool. I think after I see a character pop up I'll join, though I would like to see what exactly you have in mind first.

Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'Skyfall' & 'Lincoln'

Daniel Craig as ?James Bond? in ?Skyfall? (credit: Columbia Pictures)

?
(KCBS) ? KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews the 23rd installment of the James Bond series ?Skyfall? starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem and Dame Judi Dench. Jan also reviews Steven Spielberg?s epic, ?Lincoln? starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn and Tommy Lee Jones.

KCBS Entertainment Reporter Jan Wahl:

KCBS Entertainment Report: Skyfall, Lincoln

?
SKYFALL (PG-13)

This is the latest of the James Bond movies, with the perfectly cast Daniel Craig as 007.

But, this time Bond?s loyalty to M is tested, especially as she ordered his possible death outside of Istanbul. M (Judi Dench) is a major character in this movie as her past comes back to haunt her in the form of a bizarre, vicious former agent (Javier Bardem.)

There?s a seriousness and lack of fun, from hard drives and tech wizards to a Bond who looks very sober and unhappy most of the time. The good news is the cinematography, a great song by Adele and always watch-able actors from Dench to the underutilized Bardem to Ralph Fiennes and Craig. Just a little more light into the darkness of villains and international crime next time.

Jan Wahl Movie Review: Skyfall & Lincoln

Steven Spielberg?s ?Lincoln? (credit: DreamWorks)

?
LINCOLN (PG-13)

Director Steven Spielberg took one episode in the life of Lincoln and drew us into the story and the man: it was Lincoln getting Congress to vote yes on the 13th Amendment, ending slavery while simultaneously ending the Civil War. At the same time, he was dealing with a proposal for a negotiated peace from the South.

Written by Tony Kurshner, based on the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin, the film is anchored by a remarkable, believable performance by Daniel Day Lewis. Instead of a caricature, we meet a man filled with backwoods humor, sorrow and all the complications of humanity. He?s given great support by a fine cast, including Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
