If you are expecting a French film chronicling the last days of Marie Antoinette, then you may be in for a slight disappointment. Brilliantly directed by the Benoit Jacquot (who also co-wrote the much less impressive script) and starring Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette and Lea Seydoux, who plays one of the Queen's readers named Sidonie Laborde, and is also the protagonist of this film (for some reason) "Farewell, My Queen" is advertised as the story of the last days of Marie Antoinette, but it's more like the somewhat muted story of the two months before the "last days" of Marie Antoinette. So, even though "Farewell, My Queen" is a better movie than Sofia Coppola's ill advised, indie rock inspired, "Marie Antoinette", due to the faux-final-days story structure, in conjunction with the fact that "Farewell, My Queen" uses Marie Antoinette as a side character, telling the story from the point of view of Sidonie Laborde (a nobody) this is a film which may have many audiences scratching their heads as to why the need to show this particular moment in the life of Marie Antoinette.
As I alluded to above, "Farewell My Queen" chronicles a miniscule portion in time during the last months of Marie Antoinette's reign. However, audiences are not treated to "the good part", or the part they undoubtedly came to see. What I mean by this is there are almost no visuals of the actual Revolution, plus (and more importantly) we don't actually get to witness the final days of Marie Antoinette's life simply because "Farewell, My Queen" curiously plays out through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. Instead, audiences are forced to sit through a pseudo-love story that focuses not on the very interesting end of Marie Antoinette's reign, but on the minutiae right before it! This film is the equivalent of sitting through the love story of Jack and Rose, with the movie ending just before the Titanic strikes the iceberg. Yes, I am aware that this is a script which was adapted from a critically acclaimed novel by Chantal Thomas, BUT it still doesn't make the story's focus any less misguided. I mean, there are some scenes which do attempt to create a somewhat intriguing love story, an aspect which must be fully accredited to some fantastic mood setting by Jacquot, but in the same vein, this film never rises above said simplistic love story.
Side Note: Another issue many audiences will likely come across is how frivolously "Farewell, My Queen" throws its viewers right into the deep end of this story, with little exposition. In fact, the greatest individual flaw which hinders "Farewell, My Queen" will be seen in the audiences immediate realization that neither Jacquot's visuals or the engaging performances (which I will speak about later) are going to give those not formally versed in the players of the French Revolution and the fall of Versailles, the background information they may desperately desire, as this film half-introduces more and more characters of seeming importance. So, do yourself a favor, if you are going to see "Farewell, My Queen" (at the very least) peruse the Marie Antoinette Wiki page before going to see this film.
With that said, the visuals (the set design in conjunction with the director) are somewhat breathtaking at times, due to Jacquot making some very brave directorial choices, including tons of long takes which trail behind characters as they weave in and out of crowds, giving audiences an intimate feeling of the atmosphere of late 1700's France, and a few beautifully constructed shots of the landscapes. And I guess it doesn't hurt that the two female leads, Seydoux and Kruger, both give engaging performances. But even if Kruger's interpretation of Antoinette is one of the best I've ever seen and Seydoux is so captivating to watch as she effortlessly takes control of the movie every time she is on screen, there is simply not enough in the story or the writing to give reasoning to the eccentric behavior or motives behind the actions of Marie Antoinette or (more importantly) give a reason as to why Sidonie is so infatuated with her. So, even though, in the latter half of the film (more than an hour in) Jacquot does create an atmosphere which allows these characters to somewhat blossom, many will find it hard to care about a Marie Antoinette story that contains no beheadings.
Final Thought: Based on a "last days" plot which attempts to imitate a much better film like "Downfall", even with some spectacular direction and two engaging female performances, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than this year's "My Week With Marilyn", telling a story which focuses on characters nobody really cares about, rather than simply creating a storyline around the life/last days of (in this case) Marie Antoinette. So, even if you are a Marie Antoinette fan, with the overall structure the way it is, "Farewell, My Queen" is nothing more than DVD worthy at best.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Want to be a part of International Space Station research? Here's your chance. NASA is offering opportunities for academia, industry and government agencies to develop and carry out research and technology demonstrations on the space station using the newly installed Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Testbed.
These opportunities will allow researchers to develop new software according to the Space Telecommunications Radio Standard, or STRS, architecture for radios and reconfigure how radios communicate in space.
The SCaN Testbed is a communications, navigation and networking demonstration platform based on the STRS. The experimental platform began its initial checkout activities on the space station Aug. 13, and will operate for at least three years.
Experiment developers will provide software components to the STRS repository and enable future hardware platforms to use common reusable software modules.
The new testbed is composed of three STRS-compliant, software-defined radios to be operated in space, said Richard Reinhart, principal investigator of the SCaN Testbed at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. "This flexible testbed will allow researchers to develop new software according to the STRS architecture for the radios and reconfigure how the radios communicate on-orbit, to explore new concepts for future missions. Once proven, this new capability will enable greater science return from future NASA missions."
There are two opportunities (http://spaceflightsystems.grc.nasa.gov/SOPO/SCO/SCaNTestbed/Candidate/) to use the testbed on the station.
The SCaN Testbed Experiment Opportunity invites industry and government agencies to enter into Space Act Agreements with NASA to use the SCaN Testbed on space station. The SCaN Testbed Cooperative Agreement Notice invites academia to develop proposals to use the orbiting laboratory's SCaN Testbed research capabilities. NASA expects these first industry, government agency, and university demonstrations to take place by late 2013 or early 2014.
"These two announcements of opportunity provide industry, academia and government agency experimenters a unique service and facility to develop and field the latest communications, navigation and networking technologies not only in the laboratory, but also in the dynamic space environment," said David Irimies, deputy project manager of the SCaN Testbed at Glenn. "Investigators will gain valuable flight experience, raise the technology maturity level of their applications by operating within the space environment, and demonstrate future mission capabilities for a potentially key role in future NASA missions."

LOL... But yea, there's a fair amount of repackaged content.
I don't think the space looks modern. More contemporary than modern...
what about the butterfly? i've been searching for something similar. lots of butterfly prints have that tacky, faux-distressed Pier One kind of look to them.
Anyone got a good guess on what the paint color is?
honestly, the room looks a little precious and fussy to me. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable letting kids run through there.
Ha, so it is a repeat. Love the colors just the same.
Ha - didn't even notice that had happened!
The reason you couldn't find the same table in the same square shape is because that table is rectangular by all appearances.
To me, this is a pleasant but basically nondescript room with little that reflects the lives or personalities of its inhabitants. Nothing wrong with it and much that's right, but it strikes me as not particularly noteworthy. The sources--primarily from national brand names (stores and catalogs)--make that point.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Most people equate "gray matter" with the brain and its higher functions, such as sensation and perception, but this is only one part of the anatomical puzzle inside our heads. Another cerebral component is the white matter, which makes up about half the brain by volume and serves as the communications network.
The gray matter, with its densely packed nerve cell bodies, does the thinking, the computing, the decision-making. But projecting from these cell bodies are the axons -- the network cables. They constitute the white matter. Its color derives from myelin--a fat that wraps around the axons, acting like insulation.
Alex Schelgel, first author on a paper in the August 2012 Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, has been using the white matter as a landscape on which to study brain function. An important result of the research is showing that you can indeed "teach old dogs new tricks." The brain you have as an adult is not necessarily the brain you are always going to have. It can still change, even for the better.
"This work is contributing to a new understanding that the brain stays this plastic organ throughout your life, capable of change," Schlegel says. "Knowing what actually happens in the organization of the brain when you are learning has implications for the development of new models of learning as well as potential interventions in cases of stroke and brain damage."
Schlegel is a graduate student working under Peter Tse, an associate professor of psychological and brain sciences and a coauthor on the paper. "This study was Peter's idea," Schlegel says. "He wanted to know if we could see white matter change as a result of a long-term learning process. Chinese seemed to him like the most intensive learning experience he could think of."
Twenty-seven Dartmouth students were enrolled in a nine-month Chinese language course between 2007 and 2009, enabling Schlegel to study their white matter in action. While many neuroscientists use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in brain studies, Schlegel turned to a new MRI technology, called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). He used DTI to measure the diffusion of water in axons, tracking the communication pathways in the brain. Restrictions in this diffusion can indicate that more myelin has wrapped around an axon.
"An increase in myelination tells us that axons are being used more, transmitting messages between processing areas," Schlegel says. "It means there is an active process under way."
Their data suggest that white matter myelination is precisely what was seen among the language students. There is a structural change that goes along with this learning process. While some studies have shown that changes in white matter occurred with learning, these observations were made in simple skill learning and strictly on a "before and after" basis.
"This was the first study looking at a really complex, long-term learning process over time, actually looking at changes in individuals as they learn a task," says Schlegel. "You have a much stronger causal argument when you can do that."
The work demonstrates that significant changes are occurring in adults who are learning. The structure of their brains undergoes change.
"This flies in the face of all these traditional views that all structural development happens in infancy, early in childhood," Schlegel says. "Now that we actually do have tools to watch a brain change, we are discovering that in many cases the brain can be just as malleable as an adult as it is when you are a child or an adolescent."

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel ground almost to a halt Tuesday afternoon in preparation for Yom Kippur, Judaism's holiest day of the year.
The country has completely closed its airspace to airplanes, shut down its buses and trains, and locked its border crossings in preparation the holy day, which begins Tuesday evening and ends Wednesday after sundown. Restaurants, businesses and schools closed, government ministries shuttered, and Israeli television and radio stations went silent. Highways and roads emptied of cars ? a convention honored even by most secular and non-Jewish Israelis.
Yom Kippur is Judaism's day of atonement, when devout Jews ask God to forgive them for their transgressions. They refrain from eating and drinking and attend intense prayer services in synagogues. The day caps a traditional 10-day period of soul-searching that began with the holiday of Rosh Hashana, the start of the Jewish new year.
This year, the day of introspection comes amid heightened speculation that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities could be near. When Yom Kippur comes to a close Wednesday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will make his way to New York to address the United Nations with one main message: Iran's nuclear program is an existential threat to Israel, and it must be stopped. Israel and the United States say Iran aims to develop weapons technology, but Tehran says its program is for peaceful purposes.
Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar told Israel Radio that Israelis should pray this Yom Kippur that Israel's enemies be kept at bay.
"May God upturn whatever schemes they are scheming for us," Amar said.
Many Israelis also reflected on the 1973 Arab-Israel War, which Israelis call the Yom Kippur War because it broke out surprisingly on that day. The war marked a watershed moment in Israeli collective memory, when the country suffered heavy losses on the battlefield. On Tuesday, families published notices in the obituary sections of newspapers in memory of their loved ones who died in the war.
Thousands of worshippers shrouded in white shawls, some blowing long curly rams' horns called shofars, convened Tuesday morning on the holiest site where a Jew can pray, the Western Wall.
Many of Israel's secular Jews fast for the day, but stay at home watching movies and playing board games. In another tradition, secular children ride skateboards and bicycles through the empty streets.
At Jerusalem's outdoor market, many scurried around doing last-minute errands before the country shut down. Nearby, ultra-Orthodox Jews swung live chickens over their heads while reciting a blessing, then slaughtered the birds ? a symbolic ritual that transfers their sins to the animals. The practice has come under criticism in recent years, and many have replaced it by donating money to charity instead.
Adesu Masala, 72, an Ethiopian Jewish immigrant to Israel, was leaving the tailor's with a newly hemmed pair of dress pants to wear at his synagogue. He looked up to the heavens when he reflected on his prayers for the holy day.
"I will pray to God for a long life, and health for my children, wife and grandchildren," he said.
Tikva Horne, 70, was returning home from a visit to the doctor. She said she would be going to synagogue praying for "health for everyone, and that God forbid there will be a war."

However as it is rare that they have to be put into practice, it is common for even experienced sailors to be out of date on the latest techniques You won't be surprised to learn that most sea-goers have some knowledge of emergency procedures and many even have taken exams. However as it is rare that they have to be put into practice, it is common for even experienced sailors to be out of date on the latest techniques. It's certainly worth taking some time to brush up your knowledge.
DSC (digital selective calling)
If you have VHF radio with DSC, you should first send a distress signal by activating the distress button. All DSC-equipped vessels and Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCCs) in the area will automatically receive details about your vessel and position and you can include information about your problem. Make sure that your DSC is connected to a GPS (Global Positioning System), otherwise you'll give an incorrect position unless you make regular manual positioning updates. The alert will be repeated every four minutes until it's acknowledged. All MRCCs in the UK and most European coastguards are equipped with VHF DSC and they will respond quickly when called. You should then follow it up with a voice Mayday message on channel 16. If you accept assistance from another boat you should inform the coastguard and stop the DSC alert.
Mayday Calls
The word "Mayday" derives from the French "venez m'aider" meaning "help me" or "come to my aid".
A Mayday is a situation in which a vessel or person is in grave or imminent danger and needs immediate assistance. Examples include sinking, explosion, fire, piracy, man-overboard and serious life threatening personal injury.
Mayday calls are equivalent to a Morse SOS code or a telephone call to emergency services and can be made on any frequency, but it is normal to broadcast on VHF radio channel 16 as this is the calling, listening and recognised emergency channel. The Coastguard monitor Channel 16 and the VHF signal operates roughly within 30 miles of the nearest shore depending on radio propagation. When a Mayday distress call has been made onChannel 16, it imposes general radio silence on the channel, except for those assisting with the Mayday, until the emergency is over.
A hoax Mayday call is regarded as a criminal act in many countries, putting rescuers' lives in danger, causing a huge waste of money and time and potentially stopping search and rescue teams from attending genuine emergencies elsewhere. For example, in the USA, a false distress call carries a penalty of up to 6 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.
Remember that although in normal circumstances you need to have passed an exam to obtain a VHF radio licence before you can legally broadcast on VHF radio, anyone may use the VHF to summon help in an emergency.
How to make a Mayday call
The word "Mayday" is spoken three times, followed by the vessel's name or call sign spoken three times, then "Mayday" again and the name or call sign. You must then give vital information including position, type of emergency and number of people on board. A typical Mayday call might be:-
- Mayday, Mayday, Mayday
- This is My-yacht, My-yacht, My-yacht (call sign)
- Position 55? 50'5 North 004? 57'4 West.
- My vessel is holed and sinking
- I requireimmediate assistance
- 5 people on board, one badly injured
- Mayday, My-yacht, Over
Mayday Relay
A Mayday Relay call is made by a vessel on behalf of a different vessel in distress. If a Mayday call is not acknowledged by the coastguard after one repetition and a 2 minute wait, then any vessel who has received the Mayday call should try to contact the coastguard on behalf of the distressed vessel by broadcasting a Mayday Relay. This should use the call sign or name of the transmitting vessel but give the position of the Mayday vessel. It can be used when the vessel in distress is either too far offshore to contact the coastguard direct or is without radio capabilities. A typical Mayday Relay might be:-
- Mayday Relay, Mayday Relay, Mayday Relay
- This is My-yacht, My-yacht, My-yacht (call sign)
- The following distress call was received from yacht Hopeful at 14.35 hours.
- Mayday, Mayday, Mayday
- This is Hopeful, Hopeful, Hopeful (call sign)
- Position49? 44'5 North 001? 25'5 West
- We are on fire and sinking
- 3 people on board, one with burn injuries
- We are taking to the life raft
- Mayday, Hopeful, Over

Pan-Pan
A Pan-Pan is used to signify that there is a state of urgency on board, but no immediate danger to life or to the vessel. It informs the emergency services and other craft that the vessel requires assistance but is not in grave or imminent danger. The French word "panne" refers to mechanical failure or breakdown of some kind.
Calling procedure is similar to that of a Mayday, substituting the word "Pan-Pan" for "Mayday", followed by the relevant information about the vessel, position and nature of problem. If the problem is resolved, the emergency services and other craft in the area should be notified. Don't forget a Pan-Pan call can be upgraded to a Mayday if the situation deteriorates to the point of "grave and imminent danger". A Pan-Pan has priority over all other radio traffic except for Maydays, but after obtaining a response to your Pan-Pan you should make arrangements to transfer to another channel, leaving channel 16 free for emergencies.
Mobile Phone
You can use your mobile phone to dial 999/112 and ask for the Coastguard, but it should not be relied on because the signal is very limited and it will not alert other vessels.
Flares
You can fire a red parachute flare or a red hand-held flare at night in an emergency, or use orange smoke in daytime. They should not, however, be relied upon to raise an alert, as they need someone else to notice them, recognise what they mean and then get help.
What response will you get to an emergency call?
When the coastguard receives a distress call he will acknowledge it and respond, probably asking for more information. The coastguard will then decide how to deal with the situation, possibly sending lifeboats, search and rescue helicopters or coastguard rescue teams. He may also contact other vessels in your area, asking them to assist. It is a legal requirement for other vessels to help if they are able, whether contacted by the coastguard, or if they hear the mayday and are in close proximity.Whatever help the coastguards provide, they will guide you through the rescue procedure. If you have to take to the life-raft after making a Mayday call, do remember to inform the authorities so they know about your change of situation.
What if you receive a distress signal?
Any vessel receiving a distress signal or seeing a boat in distress in their area must respond to it as best they can, as long as they do not endanger their boat or their crew.
How can you help yourselves?
- Stay calm, especially if you are in charge.
- Ensure your radio is always switched on while at sea and tuned to channel 16.
- Keep your call sign, name (in phonetic alphabet) and list of distress procedures near the radio and practice the phonetic alphabet.
- Speak clearly and slowly, splitting numbers, for example "one-six" instead of "sixteen".
- Make sure that all your crew know how to operate the radio even if they haven't got a licence and that they know the emergency call procedures.
- If possible keep one person on standby on the radio for as long as is safely possible.
- While waiting for a response to your Mayday call - prepare flares, life rafts, life jackets, gather emergency supplies, hand held radios and grab-bags as long as it is safe to do so. Ideally each member of the crew should have their own personal grab-bag containing money, credit card, passport, mobile phone, etc.
- Get yourself and the crew into the safest place on your vessel, checking that they are all OK. Don't forget a crew member obliviously sleeping below decks. Remind yourself and crew about how to launch the life raft in case the worst happens. Remember though, only to get into the life raft as a very last resort?..you should only ever step up into a life raft (that is - only if your vessel is sinking) unless it is on fire or there is danger of explosion.
Most people sail the seas happily for years without ever experiencing an emergency, but it is worth remembering that emergencies happen without warning or sometimes even without a logical reason. The time might come when you are unlucky - so be prepared. It doesn't take much time to review emergency procedures and relay them to your crew - and it could easily mean the difference between life and death.

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) -- The Latah County Zoning Commission has imposed noise limits on a shooting range as well as a bed and breakfast with a chapel that's a popular place for summer weddings.
The Lewiston Tribune in a story on Friday reports (http://bit.ly/OgOH3V ) the commission imposed limits after hearing about the concerns of neighbors.
The commission granted PNW Arms permission to continue to run an indoor firing range but required the company to do more to mitigate sound. The commission also put off a decision about a larger firing range the company wants to build, giving the company time to develop plans.
The commission also limited summer weddings to every other weekend at a Paradise Ridge-area chapel and bed and breakfast called Meadowinds. It also banned amplified music.

For me, heating with firewood is more about feeling self-sufficient than it is about lowering my utility bills. I also like cutting and splitting logs. It's good exercise and the source of my wife's wry nickname for me, the Saturday Lumberjack. But storing and keeping the wood dry is a hassle. Tarps can trap moisture, promote rot, and be difficult to remove after a snowfall. And stacking the wood inside is a poor choice, unless you enjoy the company of insects and mice.

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS ? The Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA, has scheduled a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 29, here, and at other locations on Oahu and around the state.
Officials said this is a great opportunity for those who missed previous events or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted or unused prescription drugs to safely dispose of those medications.
?Pharmacies are not permitted by law to take back any medication or prescription drugs at their counters,? said Brent Oto, instructor, Army Substance Abuse Program, here.
?If these meds are dumped in the landfill, rain or storms have been known to wash these meds into the oceans or onto the shores of beaches,? Oto said, adding, ?unfortunately, we have (also) seen people who dumpster-dive for drugs in the trash.?
According to the DEA, the most-recent National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, held April 28, was an overwhelming success, as citizens turned in a record-breaking 552,161 pounds (or 276 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for proper disposal at the 5,659 take-back sites available in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
Locally, Oto said more than 2,000 pounds of medications were collected statewide during the April initiative.
To date, the DEA and its state, local and tribal law enforcement and community partners have removed more than 1.5 million pounds (774 tons) of medication from circulation.
?We are pleased at the response of the American people once again, and we thank them for participating and contributing to the battle against prescription drug abuse,? said Michele Leonhart, administrator, DEA, in a news release.
Leonhart said 4,268 agencies participated with DEA nationwide in April?s take-back event, including all branches of military service, as well as local substance abuse programs.
Among those involved in Hawaii are the state Narcotics Enforcement Division, Army Department of Defense Police, Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter Provost Marshal offices, and Tripler and Schofield pharmacies.
?These events are only made possible through the dedicated work and commitment of our state, federal, local and tribal partners, and DEA thanks each and every one of them for their efforts on behalf of the American people,? Leonhart said.
?While a uniform system for prescription drug disposal is being finalized, we will continue to sponsor these important take-back opportunities as a service to our communities,? Leonhart continued. ?Our take-back events highlight the problems related to prescription drug abuse and give our citizens an opportunity to contribute to the solution.?
RX Drop-off Locations on Oahu
National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 29, at various sites on Oahu. Bring all unwanted, unused or expired medications in a sealed plastic bag for safe, anonymous disposal to any of these locations: ?Schofield Barracks PX, main lobby, near flower shop; ?Navy Exchange, main lobby, near escalator; ?Marine Corps Exchange, in front; ?Kapolei Police Station, parking lot; ?Mililani Town Center, bandstand area; ?Windward Mall, center court area; or the ?State of Hawaii State Capitol.
The service is also offered at the following neighbor island locations:
?Big Island of Hawaii?s National Guard Aviation Facility, the Hawaii County Police Department or the Kona Police Station (parking lot); ?Maui County Police Department (parking lot); or ?Kauai Police Department (parking lot).
Prescription drug abuse on the rise, fosters prevention strategies
taking pills
Simply put, good medicines paired with bad behavior can cause very negative outcomes.
Just a brief look at history reveals a list of talent lost to the effects of prescription drug abuse: Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley and, more recently, Heath Ledger and Michael Jackson.
With each new medicine discovered to cure disease and relieve pain, there also are individuals who misuse and abuse the prescription drug to the point where it can be just as dangerous as street drugs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of deaths from prescription narcotics increased fourfold during the past 10 years, classifying prescription drug abuse as an epidemic.
Also, the Office of National Drug Control Policy found that prescription drug abuse is the nation?s fastest-growing drug problem, with prescription painkillers now causing more drug overdose deaths than cocaine and heroin combined.
In 2011, the Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Plan was created to expand upon the Obama Administration?s National Drug Control Strategy. The plan includes education for both public and health care providers: ?to increase awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse; ?to enhance and increase use of prescription drug monitoring programs; ?to develop consumer-friendly and environmentally-responsible prescription drug disposal programs; and ?to support law enforcement agencies in expanding their efforts to shut down ?pill mills? and stop ?doctor shoppers? who contribute to prescription drug trafficking.
More information about prescription drug abuse, initiatives and strategies ? specifically those for military families and veterans ? can be found online at www.whitehouse.gov/ondcp/prescription-drug-abuse.
