Senior Director of Communications ? American Legislative ...

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the nation?s largest nonpartisan, individual membership association of state legislators, seeks a Senior Director of Communications to provide leadership in areas of media, public relations, online and electronic communications, internal communications and promotional support of the Organization?s meetings, initiatives and publications.

ALEC?s free-market, limited government, pro-growth policies are the reason the organization maintains the support of legislators on both sides of the aisle and in all 50 states. ALEC is dedicated to solutions that put the American economy back on track, and it seeks a senior communications maven with the creativity, energy, and determination to help proactively tell our story.

The Senior Director of Communications will enjoy significant freedom to build and grow a communications team.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Promoting, positioning, and enhancing ALEC?s visibility by developing, implementing, and managing a sound, strategic communication plan
  • Overseeing all facets of ALEC?s communications efforts, including media, public relations, marketing, digital communications, and event promotion
  • Building, growing, managing, and mentoring the communications team; providing excellent leadership and enhancing the performance of the communications staff while maintaining a budget
  • Supporting the policy department by devising media strategies that complement and advance program objectives
  • Authoring op-eds and other relevant communication pieces that further ALEC?s mission

Qualifications for the position include:

  • Strong commitment to ALEC?s mission of promoting the principles of free markets, limited government, and federalism
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience in a senior management role in communications
  • Experience in staff management of 3 to 4+ people
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in public policy and non-profit industry
  • Experience in crisis communication and marketing
  • Media relations experience; rolodex of media contacts a plus
  • Creative, entrepreneurial spirit; strategic and innovative thinker
  • Campaign mentality; high energy, adaptable, and driven
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; ability to multi-task and meet strict deadlines
  • BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field

Total compensation for this position is market-driven and includes comprehensive employee benefit package.
